A few weeks ago I adopted a baby kitty. It took Jorge just a few days to make friends with her. They were inseperable! Until I had to take her to the vet for her second series of shots. I brought her home....put her in a quiet place so that she could rest....a few hours later I let her out and it took a nano-second for Jorge to loose his S&%T! It was really.....really....bad. Not only did he go after the baby....but he went after me. I have never been in that situation before, and I later found out (as I was doing some online research) that my reaction was the exact opposite of what I needed to do. However; my main concern at the time was to get the baby out of danger, and make sure that my 20 year old cat, Phoebe wasn't in any danger either. The strange part is that he has NEVER done that to Phoebe, and she has been at the vets office countless times. The second I bring her home I let her out of the carrier and it is totally fine. No issue what-so-ever!
After watching him melt down, I was devastated at the thought that I may have to put him down. Everyone that knows me.....knows that THAT IS NOT SOMETHING THAT I WOULD VOLUNTEER TO DO, but I was so terrified of him.
It was awful! I read through quite a few articles online about dealing with this issue, and Jorge was definitely "true to form" with how he reacted to me working to gain his trust again. It took me over 3 hours to get him to calm down (he was in the bathroom this whole time) so that I could get him to his own room, and we could figure out how to fix this. I have great experience with Feliway products, so that was my first purchase. Then I was told to give Rescue Remedy a try. My Vet....Family Vet Care of Chandler said that they have quite a few clients that have had great success with this product. My friend Rhonda also suggested that I give it a try. Jorge responded immedately to the Rescue Remedy and Feliway diffuser combo that I have throughout the house. The Remedy can be added to everything....you can't OD on it so I started putting it on his treats, in the water, on the dry food, the wet food....EVERYTHING!!
This morning he and the kitten were able to spend some time together, Jorge has supervised visitation...LOL. All seemed to be well, but I am proceeding with caution. He and I are back to normal which is good, and Phoebe was never harmed. Infact she slept through most of the tragedy!
Agression in animals is no joke, and it is so good to know that there are affordable products out there that ACTUALLY WORK! Treating this problem takes patience, thought, and consistency. You can't just use homeopathic medicine once or twice and then get frustrated that it isn't working. CONSISTENCY IS THE KEY!
Side note....Rescue Remedy treats Dogs, Cats, Birds, Bunnies.....all sorts
