About the authors

P. J. O’Rourke was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, and attended Miami University and Johns Hopkins. He began writing funny things in 1960s “underground” newspapers, became editor-in-chief of National Lampoon, then spent 20 years reporting for Rolling Stone and The Atlantic Monthly as the world’s only trouble-spot humorist, going to wars, riots, rebellions, and other “Holidays in Hell” in more than 40 countries. He’s written 16 books on subjects as diverse as politics and cars and etiquette and economics. His book about Washington, Parliament of Whores, and his book about international conflict and crisis, Give War a Chance, both reached #1 on the New York Times best-seller list. He is a contributing editor at The Weekly Standard, H. L. Mencken fellow at the Cato Institute, a member of the editorial board of World Affairs and a regular panelist on NPR’s Wait… Wait… Don’t Tell Me. He lives with his family in rural New England, as far away from the things he writes about as he can get.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2011This is a hysterical non-political book from the early P.J. O'Rourke (fresh from the National Lampoon) and I'd recommend it highly, but DO NOT buy the Kindle version. It is so full of typos, formatting errors, and poorly aligned words that your eyes will cross and steam will pour out of your ears. Yes, I called them. Yes, they said they'd check and call me back. No, they never called me back. Yes, two weeks later I called them again. Yes, they said "the publisher had acknowledged the errors and issues" I pointed out and the publisher was working on a new version. So yes, I'll give them another two weeks. But in the meantime, do yourself a favor and buy the real thing. It's probably cheaper, and it'll be infinitely more readable. I don't know who proofreads these Kindle books, but I'd be willing to bet their parents are not of the same species. This is the second Kindle book I've bought that's been totally worthless because of "font issues".
Time to face facts, Amazon. Not all books are made to be read on a Kindle--I just wish you wouldn't OFFER them on a Kindle if a person can't READ them on a Kindle!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2020PJ O'Roarke could write a bus timetable and make it funny, but this book is a little bit of a one-trick pony. He tends to tell the same joke over and over again, merely changing 'names and places' to make it seem different. While there were some laugh-out loud moments, it was not as inventive and innovative as his other work.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2024Once his wife kept him home and I don't blame the reason a war correspondent after 9/11 was a bit of a risk and he did warn us about the world's view on Americans at that time so I can see the frustration. Doing the Dave Barry route was a wrong turn. The old frat boy gags don't cut it like it used too.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2013Just LOVE to read O'Rourke's books, his take on almost anything is so true AND so funny. If you know, are, or related to any bachelors, this is a must read, even though a little dated...the "customs" of the bachelor are still the same. It's fast reading and will give you plenty of chuckles.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2012My parents gave me this book as a gift when I was a young bachelor and I had a disturbing realization while reading it. I had done about one third of the "suggestions" myself and thought another 15 to 20 percent of them were good ideas.
The copy I purchased here is a replacement for the original I lost in a fire.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2017WARNING: Do not try most of this at home! The bachelor may be old enough to be a grandfather today, but that doesn't make 95% of this book timely and hilarious. A great preview of the satirist's Best-seller career to come.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2018I remember reading this 30 years ago, and decided to buy a copy for my son. I didn't know PJ O'Rourke wrote it. He wasn't the household name then.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2018His most amusing book. I laughed out loud more than once while reading it.
