I read the 1-star pans of this product after ordering it. Apparently the problem with the "to short pressure plate" has been resolved by Bachmann. I installed it on my N-scale train layout and it works perfectly. My Grandsons would rather watch the train cross the railroad crossing than go through the tunnels. It is an excellent addition to my train set.

I bought this thinking that it was a cheap alternative to what I really wanted, a Flashing set of Railroad Crossbucks with automatic gates. I have a Bachmann N-scale train, with Bachmann track, and I installed this item in the track setup. It derails the train every time the train passes over it. There, of course, is NO explanation of how this this thing works in the details of the description, so the buyer buys blind. But, the train rolls over a plastic piece in-between the rails, at the Crossbucks, and the weight of the train pressing down on the floating plastic piece, is supposed to mechanically cause the gate to drop. But, instead, it raises the lightweight Locomotive off the rails, and causes it to derail every time. Don't waste your money on this cheapo item. Suggestion #2: If working with N-scale, and buying track, go with the 30" sections of bendable track to reduce the number of track connection points that can derail an N scale trains tiny wheels.

My son received this crossing gate for his N-Scale layout last week. It installed in seconds and works great. No problems with bouncy crossing gates. A word of caution in that the length of this crossing is slightly shorter than the "standard" Bachmann n-scale straight piece. In other words, if you're planning on plugging this into an existing layout, you may need to do some adjusting in other places to make it fit right (in my case, replacing a long straight piece on the other side of the layout with a shorter one where the corresponding crossing will go some day).

After reading the reviews, I decided to try it out for myself. First of all, be aware that this is about 1/2 in. shorter than the standard Bachmann 5 in. N scale E-Z straight track segment. Also, while I am just as disappointed about the "lazy levers", what really ticked me off was that the crossbucks and flashing lights looked a bit too big for N scale and were therefore were out of proportion. As a result, I decided to take the crossbuck/flashing light set from the N Scale Dual Crossing Gates, cut off the "stem", and superglued the cross/light combo over the hole where the intended cross/light from this set is supposed to be. I personally don't recommend this unless you are either a starter in model railroading or you plan to kitbash it.

I bought two of these. They do look good. One works great as an automatic derailer, throwing cars EVERY time. The other one kind of works - as the train crosses the gates bob about as if they are having an epileptic seizure. Buy at your own risk - don't expect realistic action.

This Good for beginners who want to get started using operating accessories, but kit bashing recommended for a more Realistic Operation. as some freight and passenger cars may exceed the length of the track section, causing the gates to bounce at times. For kitbashing: IR controller (i.e. Azatrax MRX2 or Grade Crossing Pro) with either a Circuitron Tortoise switch motor or feather servo (for Azatrax MRX2 Only) is recommended. Don't forget to remove pressure springs prior to motorizing the gates. Separate flashers (i.e. NJ international #2095 or Model Power #8574) recommended for lighting as dummy flashers included with original package may be a challenge to modify. Kitbashing recommended for Permanent Layout Use.

Gates don't come down automatically as indicates, looks to be a small plastic piece that when pressed down on the gates come down, but doesn't work on a flat surface so it doesn't really work at all.

one works completely correct - the second like other comments doesn't fully engage and at times causes the engine to derail. Keeps the grandson entertained..
