Rozelle, who has been awarded the Bronze Star with Valor and the Purple Heart, speaks with brisk frankness about his post-amputation battles and the gritty determination that saw him through. He recounts his inspiring battle through rehabilitation, as he learned to walk with a prosthetic foot and did his utmost to prove he still had the stuff to be a soldier: completing five sprint-distance triathlons, an Olympic-distance triathlon, the New York City Marathon, and skiing, snowboarding, and mountain climbing through Disabled Sports USA.

It’s an astonishing story of courage, determination, heroism, and bedrock patriotism. "Every now and again," says Rozelle, "I would get the standard, ‘That is horrible. How do you feel about the war?’" The fearless captain would respond: "How do you feel about your freedom? If you aren’t willing to die for it, then you aren’t American."

About the Author

Captain David Rozelle has served in the U.S. Army for over ten years since his commission from Davidson College ROTC. He is the recipient of the Bronze Star with Valor and the Purple Heart. He has been a guest on the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather, the Today Show, and Dayside with Linda Vester. He holds a degree in English literature. He lives in Fort Carson, Colorado, with his wife, Kim, and their son, Forrest.

I have had a terrible time rating this book.............

and I'm not sure I've done justice, or injustice, by it with 4 stars.

On one hand I see the book as written for the general public's reading level. It reads like a romance novel much of the time, especially the first half. I think this book may be better-liked by women. I don't mean that as a "put-down" in any way. I mean there is far more about his relationship with his wife than about Iraq.

In spite of its title, "Back in Action", it is NOT an action story, and certainly not a thriller. However, it is a look into the life of an army couple who give more for their country than their critics have ever even considered.

Does it inspire? That depends on who you are. If you are like the left wing radical R. J. Pooley Jr. "eyes open", whose ignorant criticism of the book reflects not only his political bias, but his callousness toward disabled heros, the answer is a resounding "NO". There will be many cowards and weakling critics among the left, like R. J. Pooley Jr. "eyes open", who will use their review as a platform to spew their political garbage.

If you truly love your country; if you have had prolonged absences from your spouse and children, due to either military or civilian service for your country, you will be far more understanding. The book is about soul-searching, not war. It is about relationships, not political intrigue; and it is about love, courage, devotion to duty, and a strength a critic like R. J. Pooley Jr. "eyes open" cannot understand. It is far beyond these type of people to understand someone stronger and more courageos than they are.

Unless you are tainted by hate, anger, political bias, and just plain ignorance, you will be touched by the description of the phyically handicapped and how so many of them overcome terrible disabilities and become as successful, or more successful, and certainly more praiseworthy, than those who stayed home and criticized.

And,if you have the slightest bit of patriotism in your soul you will be touched by the soldier's devotion, not only to his country, but to his fellow soldier, and the United States Army.

David Rozelle's book was very good and gave a good picture of the war in Iraq and what a wounded soldier goes through. I would have enjoyed the book more had he left out all the "F" words, though. It would have been just as good without them.

Back to the Drawing Board: An American Soldier's Review of Dissapointment, Poor Writing, and Narcissism

Whatever lessons and inspiration were supposed to be gleaned from this book were unfortunately buried so far beneath the poor writing it surpassed being labeled "painful" to read and took on the persona of being downright tortuous. However, what is seemingly a heroic story tragically drowned in cheesy one-liners and poor grammar is in fact a masterful work of irony as the author earned his BA in English thus begging the question of why the reader is forced to suffer at the hands of such horrific writing.

It is not to say that the author did not produce an example of the sort of level of patriotism and heroism that are in fact very frequent in today's armed forces; that he did. But from the trained eye of a fellow Soldier there are many pieces of this story that do not add up. To add to the suspicion that many of the "facts" of the book have been grossly embellished for a feeble attempt at adding some level of entertainment value, the clear and present level of narcissism displayed by the author clouds the story line and tips the first-hand account over the scale of reality into the realm of shameless glorification. This hyperbolic state in which he views himself and his actions are only further perpetuated by the attention his story attracted serving to feed his ego producing an unintelligible transfer of one man's hasty decisions to paper. While the author later takes a stab at showing even a morsel of humility as he recounts how his decisions led him through a temporary fall from grace, he misses the mark entirely in his attempt to be even remotely empathetic.

Overall, the main take away is that the author, like many Soldiers, gave extra while serving his country. However, he is one of only a few who have sought, through an exaggerated account falling short of inspirational, to gain from their so-called "selfless" service.
