It's a good quality dog food, I recommend it. I have been giving it to my Yorkies since 2003. They used to have 2 options: chicken and pork, now they have turkey and pork. The ingredients are good, no by-products or grains and they are small bites, perfect for a little Yorkie's little mouth.

I work at a pet food store selling only good pet foods, no Purina's, Benefuls, Pedigree type dog food there. Any foods containing wheat, corn or soy are banned from the store. The store does not carry Back to Basics, but from its ingredient list, it would easily fit in. I check dogfoodanalysis.com and dogfoodadvisor.com for dog food ratings, and the analysis sight rates the food from 2005 when it contained corn (blech) and only gives it 3/5 stars. Dogfoodadvisor is using a more current grain-free recipe and gives it 5/5 stars, so that one is a bit more accurate. I also like that there is no potato in the ingredient list. Several customers where I work say their dogs can not have potato and it is hard to find a food lacking that ingredient.

The protein is at 38% and fat at 18%, both seem higher than the average food, and there is nothing wrong with that. They add the necessary vitamins, but no probiotics. The ingredient list is not long and overly filled with fillers. I have a 55 lb dog and since I work at a pet store (no pets sold there!), I pretty much try a new bag of food each time. She does not have a tender stomach, so I don't have to worry about that. I firmly believe that switching up the food is the way to go. So many people come in and buy the same dog food for their dog month after month after month. Then start to wonder why their dog is getting sick from the food. Switch up the ingredients, does an omnivore in the wild eat the same exact thing day after day after day? No. Of course, some dogs are super sensitive, possibly from eating the same thing all the time, or they started out on junky food (i.e. Beneful), and have a hard time adapting.

I wish this food were more common in the stores here, but from what I see on the ingredient panel, and how my dog likes it as well as what comes out the other end is good, I would gladly buy this food again...alternating the proteins of course.

After almost a month on this food, my dog developed severe gas, huge runny poops which smelled horrendous! Stopped the food, and within 24 hours, he was just fine. With pork liver as the primary ingredient in the food, I believe there is too much liver which can cause lots of health problems. Dogs do need *some* liver but the actual amount they need is very low.

I'm picky about the ingredients in my dogs' food. This one has a healthy list, which is why I decided to try it. But the real test is, of course, how my dogs react. The two boys (20 pounds and 14 pounds) did well. They weren't super excited about the new flavor, and when given a choice went to their other dry food first. But they did eat this one and had no problems. My girl (8 pounds) didn't do well with the switch. She seemed to have digestive problems and probably a bit of a stomach ache. She wasn't eating with her usual gusto, and spent a lot of time in the squatting position trying to expel more than she had. I've switched their food before and have never seen her have this problem. Because of that, I switched them back and won't purchase this food.

Absolutey great for my old dog with arthritis. This dog food seems to be a good mix for him because it doesn't have any grains and junk that is bad for his digestion and joints. I have not had any health side effects using this dog food. I make my dog's food from scratch using real turkey and or chicken meat cooked in a crock pot, grind up the bone marrow, add vitamins and joint supplements, oils for omega 3's, add cooked rice and flax seed mash, mix it all by hand, store it in small jars, and then I freeze the dog's meals in the freezer for the month. He does not do good on raw meat at all and gets sick on it if raw so after much experimenting, the crock pot meat does great for him and his sensitive digestion. Then each day I add this scratch food to the Back to Basics dry dog food and he does very well on it.

I have a small dog and it makes it not too difficult to make food from scratch for him. He eats about 2 oz. of scratch home made food and about 1-2 oz of the dry food each day.

But this dog food Back to Basics is very good and probably be perfect for active healthy dogs to have alone. It is balanced and doesn't have any grain and is low carbohydrate. I am extremely picky and read all the labels and this has been the best dog food so far that I have come across. No grains, no fillers, and it uses natural organ meats which is what predator hunters would first go for in the natural state of hunting. My little dog wouldn't kill a fly but its good to know he gets what he needs nutritionally.

I bought this dog food for my two small dogs because I am always on the lookout for healthy food and especially something with crunch. For some reason they do better with hard food than wet. Anyway, they love the food and everything shipped great and fast.

I highly recommend this product for dogs with severe food allergies. Since we began buying it for our English bulldog, we haven't had any skin conditons, no bumps,no itchiness. Amazing! We are so happy to discover this brand!
