The protein is at 38% and fat at 18%, both seem higher than the average food, and there is nothing wrong with that. They add the necessary vitamins, but no probiotics. The ingredient list is not long and overly filled with fillers. I have a 55 lb dog and since I work at a pet store (no pets sold there!), I pretty much try a new bag of food each time. She does not have a tender stomach, so I don't have to worry about that. I firmly believe that switching up the food is the way to go. So many people come in and buy the same dog food for their dog month after month after month. Then start to wonder why their dog is getting sick from the food. Switch up the ingredients, does an omnivore in the wild eat the same exact thing day after day after day? No. Of course, some dogs are super sensitive, possibly from eating the same thing all the time, or they started out on junky food (i.e. Beneful), and have a hard time adapting.
I wish this food were more common in the stores here, but from what I see on the ingredient panel, and how my dog likes it as well as what comes out the other end is good, I would gladly buy this food again...alternating the proteins of course.
I have a small dog and it makes it not too difficult to make food from scratch for him. He eats about 2 oz. of scratch home made food and about 1-2 oz of the dry food each day.
But this dog food Back to Basics is very good and probably be perfect for active healthy dogs to have alone. It is balanced and doesn't have any grain and is low carbohydrate. I am extremely picky and read all the labels and this has been the best dog food so far that I have come across. No grains, no fillers, and it uses natural organ meats which is what predator hunters would first go for in the natural state of hunting. My little dog wouldn't kill a fly but its good to know he gets what he needs nutritionally.
