I really liked how Dina’s family was supportive but I loved her friendship with Bonnie and Mandy. Those three were a force to be reckoned with. This is what stories need. We need more strong female friendships that are there for one another through thick and thin. I also really loved how each chapter was named after a song from the ‘90s. This made me relive some memories through the soundtrack.
The author has the ability to write characters that make you fall in love with them. Well with the exception of the Stephany and Bethany, I did not like them at all. But I’m guessing there is a reason for why they act the way they do.
I will recommend this story to everyone. I give it 5/5 Platypires. I’m looking forward to reading the next two books.
Boucher’s story takes place in Shanwicks, the kind of town a lot of us grew up in, in a time of life where it seems like everyone knows everyone’s business, and everyone’s opinion matters almost as much as food or air. At 15, Dina is something of an outcast, a trait that most readers will be able to sympathize with. She’s struggling to figure out who she is, and what her place in the world should be, while navigating the horrible teenage dramas that surround her. As if her insecurities aren’t enough, Boucher adds to the mix Riley, Dina’s older brother’s best friend, and something of a local bad boy—though it’s always more complicated than that. When Dina decides that she needs to get into her brother’s band, the Outcast Crew, she still has to go through Riley.
Life is never simple, and it’s even more complicated when you’re a teen. Boucher captures that air of constant hope, dread and fear that seems to subsume the teenage mentality. While this is a YA romance, Boucher gives the characters some very realistic issues to work through, adding layers of depth to her characters that other authors sometimes gloss past. Riley isn’t just a bad boy, and Dina isn’t just a teen girl—there’s more to everyone, even the much-hated “Anys” who make it their goal in life to torment Dina.
In “Back of Beyond”, Boucher crafts a wonderful, complex and realistic YA romance which revolves around two very real characters. Fans of the genre will easily find something fresh in the way Boucher tells her story, and will enjoy following along with Dina and Riley.
I even appreciate Dina’s friends more after seeing what the three of them has gone through. Gabby is super adorable. She made me laugh out loud countless of times throughout the book. Her innocence and honesty are quite refreshing. And Riley, he’s a bit annoying at first but he kinds of grows on you along the way. Even Mason was funny.
Reading Back of Beyond was exhilarating and fun which I guess describe not only the experience of reading it but the book as well. It kind of made me look back to my high school years and think if I made bad decisions or was pressured by the same stuff. I really enjoyed reading this book. Neeny did an awesome job writing this one.
Neeny Boucher has done it again with the prequel to Dina and Riley's story. I fell in love Dina and Riley in Lost in Flight and I have missed them terribly, so to say I was a little excited for this would have been an understatement. Let me just say I was NOT disappointed.
It was perfect- perfect- perfect !!!! The story line is amazing. You will actually be able to relate to what these kids goes through in their young lives. The writing, the story line, the characters it is all wonderful. I didn't want it to end.
I still want more !!!
If you haven't read The Complicated Love Series you missing out. Star with Back of Beyond and follow their story into their adult life in Lost in Flight and Ties That Bind you will not regret it.
