When Kieran is 13 he falls in loves with his older brother (Brad's), boyfriend (Jordan.) Knowing he'll do anything to avoid hurting any of his family, which includes Jordan, he moves to London with his best friend Evan. Two years ago Kieran had returned home only long enough to attend his brother's funeral. Now he's going back to the man he's always loved, to an ill father, and a family business that is trouble.
Love heals all. Let's hope that, along with some ingenuity and open dialogue gives them the future they deserve.
Characterization is one of the things Scott is good at in my opinion. She has a gift for creating relatable characters that are easily empathized with. To me this completely transforms the story and while Scott could use the same plot element over and over, each story is unique because of the characters she creates within it
"Back Home" presented something a bit unique for me. In her other stories I find myself more sympathetic to one of the partners over the other because they have that one quality or issue that tips the balance. In this case both Jordan and Kieran were balanced. Both were attracted to each other and both were consumed with guilt over Jordan being the widower of Kieran's brother.
The other thing I really like is that the sex scenes are tasteful and have some meaning to the story as opposed to just being filler or relief for a horny reader. Most of the time they are very satisfying as this is the moment we have been waiting for with the couple finally together and consummating the relationship.
My only real criticism of this one was that sometimes the pace slowed down a bit with the internal issues of Jordan and Kieran but I think in all honesty it is needed to really jump into these characters' heads and experience what they're going through with the guilt that eats them up and keeps them from getting together as opposed to just sitting on the sidelines yelling "Just get together already!"
And as usual, I will add my standing "complaint" with Scott's work - it always ends too soon for me and I am left wanting more time and time again. But of course that is the mark of something good and I look forward to reading more of Scott's work. I am definitely in favor of sequels.
Fortunately, RJ Scott drops hints along the way that lead to a very different conclusion: This is a deeply felt, beautifully written and plotted, and sometimes thrilling romance that turns the concept of family and love inside out, upside down, and finally down to earth as have few books of this genre done for me lately.
The basic outline is there for you to read, and it's almost not quite believable as the plot is described. Trust me, it works brilliantly. Get this one and be prepared to raise an eyebrow and maybe even shed a tear along the way.
RJ manages to bring her characters to life in a believable manner. You finish the book and feel like you know them, and more importantly want to know more of them.
