Furthermore, it is a fascinating read even on a text level. "The Back Pain Avenger" is a wonderful collage of historic and Biblical quotes, comic illustrations, and personal testimonial. Chiappetta is a talented bricoleur, interweaving his tale of recovery with inspirational passages, stories of his social work career, and charming family anecdotes in a way that feels seamless to the reader. His love for history shines through in a really compelling way; for example, in his exposition of how his back problems began (slipping while running across Cermak Road,) Chiappetta describes the origin of the street's name (for Mayor Anton Cermak,) the street's significance as the site of his assassination (while shaking Franklin D. Roosevelt's hand,) and notes that the word "slip" is used in the Bible "as a warning over 10 times!". Exploring these broader connections within "The Back Pain Avenger," I felt that Chiappetta's story (and my own stories of pain and recovery) were tied to something much bigger than me. That's probably the best thing anyone can take from a personal memoir.
