This book is a comprehensive account of back pain offering a clear insight into this often complex topic. It offers the reader a genuine guide to managing this condition without the spurious "miracle cure". His breezy, conversational style takes the reader through a number of the most important related issues including posture, exercise, diet and stress. He then deftly reviews current treatments and fads, exploding a few myths on the way.
The end result? One of the most informative surveys of back pain to date. This is a must read for anyone who wants to be in control of one of the most out of control topics in current health care.

From the Inside Flap
The title says it all: this book will help you permanently banish your back pain. In two logical volumes, it shows you how to feel better.
The first volume makes it easy for you to understand your back pain. Using simple, clear language, it explains the structure of your spine, and demystifies many common pain-provoking conditions.
The second book offers a unique quiz that will help you to classify your injury into one of four types. In this way, you will learn how to cure your pain, not someone else's. Methods that cure your neighbor's back pain won't necessarily help you. In fact, they may even make you worse!
In the past, it was difficult to tell what advice and exercises suited each spine. Even x-rays and expensive scans were no help, for although they could sometimes pinpoint the injury, they couldn't predict which activities would hurt it. Nor could they explain how to fix it!
This difficulty was often reflected in the advice and exercises that were prescribed for back pain. Often this information was the same for every person, regardless of their problem.
How would you feel if you went to an optometrist for an eye check up, only to receive a standard set of lenses from the shelf? Pretty annoyed, I would think. Yet this is frequently what happens with back pain. No wonder it affects about 80% of people, and has an alarmingly high reoccurrence rate.
So what can you do? In this book, John Perrier has devised a system for classifying back pain into one of four types, labeled as either A, B, C or D. By using this system, you have a far better chance of garnering the right advice for your problem.
After that, the advice flows thick and fast. You will learn clever techniques that will help you to use your spine more efficiently, and discover how to think, eat, relax, and sleep away your pain. You'll also find useful information on exercises, x-rays, medication and muscles, plus some tips on how to choose a spinal health practitioner. Of course, all of the advice will be tailored to your specific problem.
Because the cure uses well-proven techniques, your relief won't just last a few days or weeks. You will feel better forever.

About the author

John Perrier was born in Brisbane, Australia in 1967. Perrier has published five books across a variety of genres and subjects.
His first book, published in 1999, was a self-help tome entitled 'Back Pain: How to get Rid of It Forever'. This book was an instant success in Australia, selling out its original print run. This book spawned an offshoot publication entitled 'Using Your Brain to Get Rid of Your Pain', which is a simple, commonsense guide on how to manage stress, reduce pain and think more healthily.
Perrier has also penned three novels. The first, in the historical fiction genre, is 'Captain Rum - A Wondrous Journey''. It chronicles the fantastic tale of Fintan McAdam, who set sail solo from London in 1821.
The second novel is science fiction comedy for the young (and young at heart): 'A Few Quiet Beers with God'. Set in 2034, it follows the comedic mishaps of a young Australian named Dave who becomes entangled in a global power struggle.
Perrier's third novel is a humorous travel biopic entitled 'Campervan Kama Sutra', a hilarious account of his family holiday across outback Australia with three kids. If you have half as much fun reading this as he had writing it then you are in for a treat!
When he is not writing, Perrier likes to play basketball, cheer on his beloved Carlton Blues AFL side, potter in his herb garden, bush walk, play with his kids and listen to blues music. Occasionally he does two or three of these simultaneously.

Of most benefit was the exercise section, in which you use your back pain classification (which you deduce from an earlier quiz) to guide you as to the correct exercises. This is a major leap forward over many other books, which tend to just list a series of exercises without any real idea whether they will help or hinder.
I also liked the comprehensive nature of this book. It looks at back pain from nearly every angle, including exercise, sitting posture, general habits, psychological aspects, practitioners, surgery – you name it. Most of these gave advice relative to the aforementioned back pain classification, which made it even more relevant.
Finally, I loved the friendly, simple style in which the book was written. I could almost imagine the author (a physiotherapist) sitting in front of me, talking directly to me about MY back pain, and cracking an occasional joke along the way to lighten the mood. If you’re after a comprehensive, tailored approach to curing your back pain, written in a funny, easy style, then this book is perfect for you.
They reminded me of many points I’d long since forgotten. I particularly like the section in Volume 2 on exercise – it’s so positive, and a good reminder that we really have to keep moving. The mental and psychological aspects also receive thorough treatment. It’s all written with subtle humour and in a very readable style.
But the most important thing that re-reading this book really did was to remind me of what a positive effect it had on my life. My back pain went from a daily score of about 8/10 to about 3/10, which is very manageable in comparison. I am very grateful that I read it, and although I’m not a doctor, I am confident that most sufferers of back pain would gain similar benefit.

Thank you.
I wish you all the best.

First, it takes the very commonsense approach of giving different groups of exercises, and occasionally separate advice, for different back problems. This seems so obvious as to be a necessity, but I haven’t come across any other book before that did this.
Second, it is extremely comprehensive. It covered every aspect of back pain that I could think of, and more besides. Other books that I’ve read seem to be simply a collection of exercises, or some old staples such as “stand up straight” or “lie on a hard mattress” etc. This book takes a refreshing look at many such old wives tales, telling you where and when they are right or wrong.
Finally, this book leaves you with a self-directed plan of how to put it all into action.
Is it working? I’ve had back pain almost constantly for 10 years. Six weeks after reading this book I reckon its about 50% better, on some days 80% better. As the book says, the changes I’ve made are permanent, so hopefully it will stay that way forever.
