DK Eyewitness books like Back Roads Spain are excellent for planning a trip and using while you're on the roll. This video shows a few shots from inside the book and gives an explanation of how they are presented.

Am planning on a self guided 2 week tour of Spain and would miss key areas if not for this book. I would not have known about the beauty of the drives in the Pyrenees and some smaller towns in Valencia. It presents extremely valuable information in easy to read and understand chapters. A wealth of data in pictures, maps and words. Adds great value to trip planning. I made plans using this and the DK Spain book, then had them reviewed by a native Spaniard who said that this was a great trip and was surprized that I knew so much about the lesser known places. I am very glad that I bought this book, and for half of the amount that retail stores charge.

Back Roads of Spain is power packed with 25 leisurely drives in Spain, including maps, photographs and keys to road signs. A host of additional information awaits the avid reader, too, ranging from general data on tipping, time, banking and parking regulations in Spain. Using the information contained in this book will add so much to your European vacation and help the traveler avoid some of those nasty pitfalls that can ruin a vacation. Well worth reviewing before you go overseas and a priceless resource once you reach the Continent.

Spain is wonderful. Have traveled it by auto, independently and self guided many times. I found this book moderately helpful, the photos and illustrations MUCH better than other guidebooks, which means you have a much better idea of what a place looks like before you commit to going there! DK guidebooks put all others to shame when it comes to illustrations and overall material quality. It's an idea book that provides enough detail to make routing and planning decisions with confidence.

Imagine this. You love to travel. You like to take a relaxing, leisurely pace and absorb the culture. Spain is an astonishing tapestry of quaint villages, awesome landscapes, and hospitable people. All you need is some cash, a small car, and a good guidebook.

Dear reader, you will have to take care of the cash and rental of the small car, but the guidebook is right here. Want to get off the beaten path in Spain? Look no further.

The book is organized around 25 driving tours of various lengths (from 1 day to 5 days), arranged by geographic region. Each tour includes recommended sites, towns, lodgings, restaurants, and practical information. All of this is introduced by practical material that summarizes everything from weather to how to rent a car in Spain. It's a self contained guide.

Then there's the photography. All of the tours feature lovely color photographs of town and landscapes. There are good, simple color maps as well, but one thing potential readers familiar with the DK Eyewitness series will want to know is this: There are no 3-D color cutaway drawings that you may have seen in other DK guides. The material in this book doesn't lend itself to that kind of illustration, because these places are about subtle contemplation rather than grandeur.

This is a book armchair travelers will love too, because each driving tour is narrated just enough to allow the reader to imagine the sites and listings. If you're up for a rural jaunt in Europe's most beautiful country, this is your book.

My stepmom loves traveling in the backcountry, wandering from serendipitous awesomeness to delightful adventure and on to something even better after that. That's how she did France, and that's how she wants to do Spain.

And she basically loves this book (she hasn't left for Spain yet; I'll update after her trip.)

We used this book while meandering from Barcelona to the south of Spain, and couldn't have been more pleased. This is not your typical travel book in that there is only limited information on where to stay, where to eat, etc., but if you are looking for recommended scenic driving itineraries, it is perfect. The route through southern Catalonia was particularly memorable, and we would have never been introduced to Siurana (a trip highlight for us) if not for this book. We gave our copy to friends when we arrived in Lisbon, but we will be buying this book again before our next trip to Spain!
