Editorial Reviews
Correct spelling is Back Home in Sulphur Springs. This is a CD. Should not have been listed as a book; very problematic.

This is one of those amazing early albums by a very talented musician, that captures the magic in his inspiration. I've had music by Norman and other folks playing together for a long time, but this was a new acquisition - one I hadn't heard, though it was recorded in 1971. The wonderful Tut Taylor joins him on Dobro, and Norman is something else on the guitar, adding some nice mandolin playing as well. Beautiful timing and amazing sizzling licks blend with slower old time tunes that he gives a very genuine old time feel, taking you back in time as if you're really there, way back. I love this guy, but this album is that rare kind of magic that most often comes early in a performers career, showing a depth of inspiration that cannot be outdone in even a long successful career.

This is not my favorite Norman Blake CD but it's upper tier. The picking is tremendous. Re songs, my favorite may be Randall Collins. Weave and Way is a gem. A minor mystery to me is the relationship between Blake's Weave and Way and Michelle Shocked's Weaving Way. Same melodies, slightly different spelling of titles. Blake's is instrumental, Shocked's has lyrics. I like them both in their own way.

Brilliant performance from Norman, one of my favorites! I daresay I prefer it to Whiskey Before Breakfast, which is also a wonderful recording. In later years, Norman has cast his eye back, in terms of song selection, lyrical content, and general disposition. While he's always been a traditionalist, this CD is the most forward looking of his work. While he relishes older tunes like Bringing In The Georgia Mail, Cattle In The Cane, and Bully Of The Town, he contributes some strong material of his own, like Randall Collins and Ginseng Sullivan. Warp Factor 9 is a fun instrumental, and a side of Norman that stopped seeing after a while as he began to focus more intently on his roots-material. Strongly recommended!

I love the album. What I didn’t love was having to order a second time because the delivery guy put it on the wrong porch.
Guess Jeff Bezos can afford it though.

Not his best work. He seems to be struggling to find something original.
I prefer his interpretations of great old fiddle tunes and the like. But I understand
his desire to reach out beyond the old stuff. Maybe he'll do it next time.
Still one of the great players. On a par with Doc Watson who always stuck to the old stuff.

American mountain music is wonderful! Norman Blake makes it even more wonderful!

I first heard Norman Blake on "Will the Circle be Unbroken" two album
set when it was first released. In all the music that was going on with
that album, the musicianship was head and shoulders above a flawless
effort of the rest of the musicians. I "had" to find work of this
picker, Norman Blake. I had to wait for a "few years", until Norman
Blake got around to putting out "Back Home in Sulfer Springs". It was
worth the wait. If you only purchase one Norman Blake disc, this is the
one. Of course if you buy this disc, I suggest you buy the disc, which
was recorded at the same general time and the same studio, Tut Taylor's
"Friar Tut". Because they both played on each other's disc, it is like
getting a double disc. No if and or buts about it, just the best flat
picker, with almost a skeletal style, no frills, no thrills, just good
ol' American music. In my days of doing sound and lights, many friends/
musicians tried to "pick" Norman Blake's style, no on was able to
replicate the runs, or the pickin' of this American treasure. I highly
recommend getting both "Back Home in Sulfer Springs, and Friar Tut"
and listen to it while having "Whiskey before Breakfast".

Norman Blake

A great debut album by a great acoustic guitar player
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 3, 2014
This is one of the most interesting records I have listened to in a long time. While the artist's technical skills are already fully developed, his artistic journey is still in its early stages. The guitar work is crystal clear and precise while the Dobro delivers the pleading sound long associated with Bluegrass. I'd recommend this album to any one who is interested in American roots music. Great stuff.
