In the field stuff happens, and knowing how to cope can be the difference between a great trip and a miserable one. Plus, your gear should last many years, but only if you know how to keep it working properly.

This book covers all manner of outdoor gear—from boots and packs to tents, jackets, and kitchenware. Kristin Hostetter has successfully written a book on how to fix your own gear. Heck, she even fixed my gear in this book. My trekking poles were shot after a fall in the catskills, or so I thought. I was about to trash them and spend another 200 bucks, when I saw that Kristin was looking for gear to fix for her book. I got in contact with her and before I knew it, my poles were returned almost as good as new. This isn't just a hypothetical "how to fix field problems", she actually did it. And using simple tools that everyone has.

So, I highly recommend this book for anyone who has money invested in gear and uses it. You will definitely bang your gear up sooner or later and need to do some minor repairs. Kristen gives you step-by-step, easy to follow directions. If you would rather fix your broken gear than blow more money on the same thing, you need this book!

The Complete Guide to Outdoor Gear Maintenance and Repair is much more than a how-to for fixing broken gear. It's a thorough reminder of the real-world scenarios you may face when a gear breakage might occur - and the unpleasant consequences of not being prepared.

The good news is that with a tiny bit of planning, and a modest expenditure on repair products, the author shows you how to take care of the majority of equipment problems you will likely ever face out in the wild.

This is not only the best 'how-to' repair book for outdoor gear, it's probably the best 'how-to' book I've ever read on any subject.

Indispensable and truly worth its weight in gold.

It really is that good.

This author has game - heck she trained the Editor in Chief in gear. She knows the people who made it, designed it, sell it - and then she takes all this gear out and tests it and knows all the others testing it. The big so what to us is that she is the book and shared it. A zillion hours spent saving, fixing and caring for gear leaves us with this fine work. Must have if you don't want to have to buy new stuff every year. Keep it working well, stay safe and save our planet and your wallet.
Peace,
Swami Nick

Well written and informative - not just a rehash of old ideas like other books on the topic. The tips and techniques presented are truly useful and eliminate the need to gather information from multiple sources. Ample illustrations throughout the entire book help to convey important points and enliven the presentation. Highly recommend!

What's not to like about a book that makes practical remedies to most things that might go wrong approachable, at the very least. Read this book and you'll have a good idea of not only what can go wrong but what you can do to prevent problems and to fix them when they arise. That's the best way to prevent pre-trip anxiety I know of. This book does the trick in a clear, insightful and simple way.

I've gone through most of this book and it has great fixes for your camping/hiking equipment when you damage it through accidents or normal use. I'm keeping it next to where I store my gear at home for easy access when I need it. It is full of great ideas and pictures with good instructions for repairs that helps keep you from dumping lots of money for replacing gear. A lot of the fixes I've used actually helps make that tear/break/hole stronger than before and doesn't diminish the reliability or looks of the gear. This is a must for your library or garage...you will get your money back and more and it helps you gain knowledge of what to carry on trips that will help you when those equipment emergencies happen. Happy trails!
