This small book provides some insights into how effective a political operator Australia's John Curtin actually was. Although one cannot avoid a feeling that the authors of this book and their sources squibbed it, it is still one of the few books detailing just how John Curtin worked. This makes this an important book as it provides some perspectives of Curtin without the cloying sentimentality that usually attaches to his story. One cannot avoid the fact that John Curtin took control and unified the Australian Labor Party in the face of unwavering opposition by individuals and forces within the Party and that he sat, watched and ably assisted his conservative opponents destroy themselves whilst remaining above the fray and holding on to their respect as a 'good chap'. This book adds a little weight to the idea that John Curtin was a very capable political operator with a very ruthless streak.
