Not only is this the story of a young man playing the game that he loves at a very high level, it is also a story of someone who finds himself dealing with challenges of living in completely different cultures (grocery shopping, driving a car, even doing his laundry), often unable to communicate with people in the places where he was living. Pete decides to immerse himself in each situation, reaching out to people, learning the language and local customs, coming up with ingenious solutions to situations, and making new friends. He makes each situation a positive, learning experience.
Pete tells his story in a very candid way, and you feel like you are sharing a conversation with him as you read it. The book provides insight into Pete’s actions and decisions using the “backspin” sections, short interludes where Pete describes something from earlier in his life that influences his action or decision at the current point of the story. These provide an interesting perspective on the events he is discussing. He also passes along several valuable life lessons, among them:
- Make everything that you do a positive experience
- Work hard at everything that you do
- Be friendly and positive
- Help people along the way
Backspin is a very good read. I found myself continuously picking it back up to read just a little more, right up to the point when I finished it. The book is suitable for anyone. My kids are in high school and middle school, and each want to read Backspin (disclosure: Pete has worked with both of them at his basketball skills academy, The Scoring Factory). I will be delighted to let them read it. I believe that anyone who reads Backspin will enjoy it too.
