STARRED REVIEW Flottum (editor, Bee Culture magazine) brings beekeeping into the backyard with this handbook on keeping hives and harvesting their products. New material on natural beekeeping and "extreme urban beekeeping" will satisfy most readers. — Library Journal Collection Development February 2014
About the Author
Kim Flottum brings a background of twelve years of plant science, honey bee research, and basic farming to his thirty years as the editor of Bee Culture magazine where his main occupation is finding the answers to the multitude of questions that beginning, intermediate, and even advanced and experienced beekeepers bring to the table. He teaches beginning and advanced beekeeping courses, travels extensively to educate and lecture, and contributes to a variety of other publications on the basics of honey bees and beekeeping biology, the business of bees and pollination, producing and using varietal honeys, and a host of other subjects. His books, magazine articles, interviews, and blogs are widely read for both their fundamental and advanced contribution to beekeeping knowledge. His magazine platform gives voice to his social commentary on topics ranging from genetically modified foods to pesticide abuse to both good and bad government regulations in the industry. He is beekeeping’s leading advocate for fundamental honey bee safety including insuring excellent honey bee health, providing extraordinary forage, and minimizing the use of agricultural pesticides.

My wife ordered this book me for Father's Day. I got the book and took it to the pool while the kids swam. Between that afternoon and later that night, I cruised through this book. It is great. It is filled with great closeup pictures that really demonstrate each of the points that the author is making.
It is a very comprehensive book that walks through almost every situation that arises in beekeeping; from the purchasing of the equipment, to what type of equipment/hives to get, to the different strains of bees, to hive inspections, to issues that may arise, to health issues and hive invaders to mistakes to avoid, and on and on. The book also includes a thorough walk-though of what needs to be done each season of the year in respect to working with the bees and the hives.
The chapters of the book are:
1) Starting Right
2) About Bees
3) About Beekeeping (including thorough discussion about honey)
4) About Beeswax
5) 25 Rules of Modern Beekeeping
NOTE: Don't get fooled by only 5 chapters. There's almost 200 pages in this book, it's about 8"x10" in size, and for my old eyes, the print was rather small. There's a TON of info here.
There is a huge wealth of knowledge in this book. It will be indispensable as my family moves forward with beekeeping. I will reference this book continually.

Even old time beekeepers will learn something in this wide ranging, yet thorough book. Why? Because the author, as editor on one the two most popular beekeeping journals, has used his access to latest information on everything from new ways of keeping bees, to the most update information on bee pests, like varroa and small hive beetle to produce by far and away the best beginner honey bee book ever published.
I loved the '25 Rules of Modern Beekeeping' near the end of the book that neatly and memorably summarized the preceding beautifully illustrated 200 pages.
Bravo, Kim Flottum, Bravo!
