Neuroscience for Everyone!
We started Backyard Brains to make neuroscience tools accessible to everyone. Why? 1 in 5 people will have a neurological disorder, and there are no cures! We need more people studying the brain. Typically, you have to wait until graduate school. Not anymore! Now everyone can be a neuroscientist!Same Tools and as the Pros!
The Muscle SpikerBox was designed by professional neuroscientists to give students and DIY scientists a powerful tool for performing data-driven experiments. Amaze and impress your friends by amplifying their secret motor output as seen in our recent award-winning TED talk.Witness Your Brain Activity
Detect and hear the electricity hidden in your muscles and display them in real time right on your mobile or tablet device! The Perfect Science Project
How fast do your muscles fatigue? You can find out! What is your visual-motor reaction time? Measure it! Collect live data, analyze, plot and let the blue ribbons flow. What Will You Discover?
Backyard Brains provides over fifty published experiments that students may replicate and learn from, but the most interesting experiments are about your questions that are waiting to be answered. For the First Time Ever
“This is the first time the general public is able to do what researchers and medical clinicians have done for years,” says Greg Gage, CEO of Backyard Brains, “The brain naturally communicates to the outside world through muscles. Now we can allow everyone to record this output directly and easily.”About the Startup
Describe your product in 3 words.
Neuroscience for everyone!
How did you come up with the idea for this product?
As grad students, we often interacted with schoolchildren during neuroscience outreach events. We often wanted to show real "spiking" activity to students, but this was impossible due to the high cost of equipment.
What makes your product special?
Our research tools are the first of their kind. We turned our $40,000 grad school lab equipment into something that everyone can enjoy.
What has been the best part of your startup experience?
The impact we have seen through distributing affordable science equipment around the world.
