How did you come up with the idea for this product?

As grad students, we often interacted with schoolchildren during neuroscience outreach events. We often wanted to show real "spiking" activity to students, but this was impossible due to the high cost of equipment.

What makes your product special?

Our research tools are the first of their kind. We turned our $40,000 grad school lab equipment into something that everyone can enjoy.

What has been the best part of your startup experience?

The impact we have seen through distributing affordable science equipment around the world.

Nice high tect product with a great build at a low price, the only change I wold make is more heavy duty cables but thats something which is easy to correct yourself considering the product is at such a reasonable cost. Maybe they should sell that as an extra option or potential for future additions.

We are extremely impressed with this EMG Spiker-Box and the electrophysiology experiments it can be used for. It is the ideal gift for anyone interested in practical activities exploring neuroscience. This device allows you to detect bio-electric activity of small or large muscles. The makers of the Spiker-Box, Backyard Brains, Inc. have also created a wide variety of experiments for neuroscience exploration, using the EMG Spiker-Box, which they have posted on their fabulous website www.backyardbrains.com. The best thing about this is all the experiments come with video tutorials, step-by-step guides and can be adapted to fit all levels of learning. This is the ideal 'toy' for curious middle-schoolers and advanced undergraduates alike. We had the fortune to meet the founders of Backyard Brains, Inc. at a science expo last year. Our 11 year old son, who has a passion for electronics and robotics, was inspired by the Spiker-Box creations and after meeting the co-founders was keen to learn more about neuroscience. Backyard Brains, Inc. have opened a whole new world of discovery, learning and understanding for him. His curiosity grows with every experiment he creates with the Spiker-Box. I can't thank Backyard Brains, Inc. enough for designing something that brings neuroscience to young, curious minds.

I’m a neuroscience student, and I’ve used the muscle spikerbox (and other backyard brains kits) in education and outreach for well over a year. A lot of science education demos may be fascinating to those interested in science, but don’t have the fun, weirdness, or relevance to draw in and stick with everyone else. Models used in class and lectures have only limited educational value, as they can only approximate and incorrectly represent real phenomenon. This fixes both of these issues-it depends on a real, live, and observable phenomenon that’s occurring constantly in anyone watching. People are amazed when they see their own muscle electricity represented on a screen. They never forget being hooked up with cables and sticky electrodes to that strange, little orange box. In courses, this always makes for one of students’ most memorable classes. For outreach any table with this will have a constant line of people waiting to see and learn. If you’re interested in teaching science, demoing science, or learning yourself, I can’t recommend this highly enough.

Hear your muscles crackle and pop!

Before I used this, I guess I knew that there was electricity in my body and controlling parts of it, but this muscle spikerbox really drove it home. There’s no turning back once you take the red pill and *see* and *hear* the electricity in your muscles. It blew me away! Now I want to learn and see and hear everything about this, and buy whatever new product BYB has when I get the chance-I can actuall afford to buy this stuff to learn, I don’t have to take classes or buy big lab equipment. There’s also something so different about handling this equipment and using it yourself, rather than just reading or watching an online lecture. Cockroaches, plants, your heart all use electric signaling! Thanks for opening my curiosity

I bought my brother and his two kids (girl age 2, boy age 5) a Muscle SpikerBox Bundle for Christmas. They loved it! It worked as advertised and was pretty neat. We did lots of experiments showing how electricity passed through all of our bodies. If we held the electrodes just right, we were able to be our own radio antennae and could clearly hear a radio station through the device. Impressive! Everything is learning opportunity with these kids!"
