Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this voluminous look at all things bacon, the creator of BaconUnwrapped.com takes her love of pig belly to print. Like its subject, this material is best consumed in small portions; along with anecdotes and opinions from hog farmers, chefs, food bloggers and average Joes, first-time author Lauer also covers topics like bacon production, non-pork variations, and songs devoted to the breakfast meat. Lauer does her best to keep things light, but her relentless cheerleading quickly becomes grating; her phrase "The Best Meat Ever" appears on almost every page. Still, bacon lovers will enjoy (and probably employ) the glut of trivia, including the restaurant chain that first put bacon on a cheeseburger (A&W), the number of states with a town named "Bacon" (six), and alternate uses such as "bacon plaster," assembled with cheesecloth and affixed to one's chest in order to ward off a cold. Even those well-acquainted with bacon will find new recipes like Black Pepper Bacon Chili, Bacon-Wrapped Tater Tots, Bacon Bloody Marys and Candied Bacon Ice Cream. Readers who, like Lauer, possess a borderline-obsessive love for bacon are likely to embrace this as their new Bible, but anyone else will quickly get their fill.

From the Back Cover

It's salty, smoky, and sweet. It's experiencing a culinary renaissance. It can make almost any dish better. It's bacon, and it's the best meat ever. And now, here's the book that celebrates that deliciously sinful strip of cured pork belly.

In Bacon: A Love Story, popular bacon blogger Heather Lauer serves up a piping hot dish of fun and facts with this definitive love letter to what she calls meat candy. Heather explores the ins and outs of how bacon finds its way to your skillet and what to do with it when it gets there.

Bacon: A Love Story features:

  • Makin' Bacon: a tour of country-style bacon outfits and their time-honored methods and traditions. Hankering for some pepper, cinnamon, honey, jalapeño, or vanilla bourbon-flavored bacon? They've got it! There are also tips for making your own signature cure.
  • "Bacon Nation": profiles of bacon-loving chefs across the country who incorporate the meat into their menus in increasingly innovative ways.
  • There's Bacon in This?: Heather dishes out more than twenty delicious recipes for tons of bacon goodies like Bacon-Wrapped Tator Tots, BLT with caramelized bacon, Jalapeño-Bacon Pizza, and a few surprises like Bacon Bloody Marys and Bacon Brownies.
  • Bacon 411: an extensive resource section on all things bacon.

Written in a witty, engaging style and brimming with Lauer's infectious passion for the Best Meat Ever, Bacon: A Love Story is a must-read for anyone who loves bacon or is passionate about food.

"Bacon: A Love Story" crosses the line from "enthusiastic" to "annoying" sometime around the fiftieth or sixtieth time that the author refers to bacon as "The Best Meat Ever". A collection of smaller essays, the book offers trivia, recipes, and a brief overview of pork farming and the process of making bacon and related meat products, but little thought appears to have been given on how to make the essays work together as a whole collection. Information is often repeated as you read from chapter to chapter, and it doesn't always feel necessary. I also had a concern that some of the information, such as descriptions of businesses and restaurants and their menus, may no longer be current at the time of publication due to the constantly changing nature of the restaurant industry. Bacon enthusiasts will probably enjoy this book, but it gets repetitive for others after a while.

My husband loves bacon and I bought this book for him after seeing an article about it in our local newspaper. He has never laughed so hard! And it's all so true!

Bacon fans will definitely want to read all the odd stories, history, and modern uses of bacon in this fun, breezy read. I read it over the course of a few months, just picking it up here and there with a strip of bacon and a hefty glass of ice water, and it was fun to get some new ideas for how to eat bacon, and some definite ideas that I do NOT want to try (Paula Deen's bacon/ beef/ egg sandwich encased between two glazed donuts - EW!). All in all, a fun read for the bacon fans among us...

When I bought this book I was thinking of "Seduced by Bacon", a terrific book. However, this one does not read near as well nor is it attractive. It does have a lot of interesting info about bacon, good for someone seriously into it maybe. However, it did not convey that sensuous, yummy appeal of bacon that is so in right now. I bought it as a gift book also and was disappointed at myself in actually giving it to someone but I certainly couldn't deal with two of them....
