1 stars: Couldn't watch more than 15 minutes. Unwatchable, or language not as described.
1.5 stars: Just started it, and fast forwarded to the end to get if off my, "movies we think you'll like", list permanently. I hope this cost Amazon money every time I do this!!!!!!!!!!
2 stars: Jumped my way to the end for the ending. Unwatchable, but interested in how this turd ended.
2.5 stars: I fell asleep, or closed my eyes for most of it.
3 stars: Watched it all, but not happy about it. Nothing better to do.
4 stars: I watched it, liked it well enough. Would never watch it again.
5 stars: Great moving picture show! I'll watch it again, and maybe again in a few years.
i assure you, youve wasted 2 hours of your life on less entertaining movies..
watch it, with a bit of a kind heart and youll enjoy it.
plus its Danny Trejo!
Frank Vega is a Vietnam veteran who apparently lived his post-war life as a hot dog vendor. Then one day he beats up two skinheads on a bus and becomes internet-famous. When his good friend Klondike is killed, he hops on the nearest public bus and embarks on a violent quest to bring the murderers to justice. With only his trusty bus map and fighting skills honed from 40 years of selling hot dogs, Frank soon picks up the trail. Each violent encounter, often pitting Frank against multiple opponents, brings him closer to the truth. Along the way he falls in love with a beautiful young mom who apparently married the wrong guy, and befriends her son, a foul-mouthed pre-teen who uses insults to express affection.
A bunch of stuff happens, and then Frank has a fight against Charles S. Dutton, a crooked real-estate developer, and the only guy who can match the hot-dog vendor for sheer ferocity and toughness. Frank wins after the timely intervention of his new girlfriend, and then Frank lives happily ever after without having to answer for smashing through buildings in a stolen bus, or sticking a guy's hand in a garbage disposal to extract information, or beating people up practically everywhere he goes.
Danny Trejo plays the main character. Trejo's Frank Vega is likeable and polite in between the times he's torturing people or beating them unconscious. Trejo is probably the only thing that makes this film even remotely watchable. Despite the ludicrous action, the thin plot, and the laughable dialog, Frank Vega is someone audiences can root for. Ron Perlman shows up and chews some scenery for a minute as the crooked mayor, and he says his lines with the proper amount of malice and entitlement one would expect from a corrupt public official.
If you just want to watch a movie about an old, leathery guy beating up a bunch of young guys and Charles S. Dutton, who is neither young nor leathery, you will probably enjoy this film.
Script 2/5
Production 3/5
The movie follows the synopsis but it overplays the gentle giant turned vigilante. It even goes to far as to "helping an old lady cross the street" we he doesn't do that but he does help an old lady with her groceries. Throughout the movie he is confronted by strong young men, all of which he dispatches with relative ease and then we come to the main villian - and old fat man. He eventually wins of course but he has more trouble with this person that any of the stronger and younger men.
The final fight includes chasing each other down in busses. The villian's bus is even t-boned by a train and he walks away unscathed. It was just ridiculous.
Throughout the movie it if filled with one-liners that were unoriginal and flop in terms of humor. They also attempt jokes related to differences in age (i.e. what's a flash drive? or a reference to a party-line).
And of course, following the book on film production they had to throw in a love interest which played not part in the story other than to be there.
Top reviews from other countries
After reading all of the reviews by other users I immediately ordered Bad ass. and waited expectantly for it to arrive.
well, I wasn't disappointed. Initially I though it was a little low budget, but those thoughts were soon dispelled as a thoughtful storyline emerged that covers loads of issues such as friendship, loyalty, revenge, anger, sadness and the often looked down upon and derided relationship between two people of vastly different ages.
There was loads to enjoy and although I was expecting a blood bath there was surprisingly little violence compared to many war movies.
I likened this film to Harry Brown (starring Michael Cain). Both had similar issues, though Bad Ass was more focused.
I also though there was some humour in the movie that together with the love interest helped to balance the story somewhat.
On the negative side I do think Danny is much better as a supporting actor. Although I love him to bits I do think his acting is a little wooden. What carries him is a face that exudes character and a deep baritone voice that comes over as gravely as Rod Stewart singing Maggie May.
Every part I've seen him act in has been a pleasure to watch though I only really became aware of him when I saw Once Upon a time in Mexico and then The Crow: wicked Prayer. when I look at his Wiki entry I'm amazed at how much he's done and will be exploring the back catalogues for more of this excellent character actor.
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. The story isn't going to win any awards, neither will the acting; but do you really expect that from the cover, title or the actor.
I could write a full and lengthy review here...but is it really needed? I will watch it again and I will check out the sequel.
