That said, I deducted a star because this CD relies so heavily on covers. On the other hand and by tradition, blues music is as often as not music "borrowed" from earlier versions and twisted to the moment, and Slim's versions here are strong enough statements of Slim's style to take their own footing.
If you like traditional blues, you can't go wrong with Magic Slim and with his versions on this CD of some blues classics.
This album, Bad Boy, is his last work so far. Consisting of twelve masterfully selected songs (both covers and originals) this album was released on Slim's long-time recording partner, Blind Pig in 2012.
You find here slow Blues, Rockin' Blues, twelve-bar Blues etc. all spiced with badass guitar and vocals; band, which is extremely experienced and knowledgeable, and you'll absorb feeling and as we all know, Blues is all about the feeling; and, of course, as always, Slim demonstrates he can make any Blues song sound like his own, let this be Muddy Waters' "Champagne And Reefer" or Blind Lemon Jefferson's "Matchbox Blues"
One reviewer noted that there is "nothing new" in this album. This is highest praise to the work. When talking about Magic Slim, "new" could only mean worsening `cause better is practically impossible.
Personnel: Magic Slim (vocals, guitar); Jon McDonald (guitar, background vocals); Andre Howard (bass guitar, background vocals); B.J. Jones (drums, background vocals).
Recorded at Rax Trax Studios, Chicago, IL.
