Another objection I have with this genre is the dearth of characterization. Except for her libido, Alison is blank, and Victor is just a name as is Evan. They're handsome, but what does that mean? Alison's sister Anna is also invisible. Consequently, no story exists.
Fiction comes alive when description takes the reader for a ride. "Bad Night" has nothing to ride on.
The characters are flat and one-dimensional. There is no antagonist to speak of because the entire point is the sex scene which is lack luster. The main character is predictable in the same way that she would be if this was a porn script. Emotionally upset over her boyfriend cheating, she jumps into bed with a guy she just met and doesn't even bother to ask his name. Almost no dialogue between characters and repetitive phrasing makes the scene hard to read. The formatting on the Kindle is off, which causes the chapters to run together like they would if you were reading it as a Word Document and didn't force the new chapter to the next page. It does have an interesting twist, but it should have been a plot twist, not the ending. The entire piece feels like it's an unfinished writing assignment or a story starter for those trying to break their writer's block.
Things happened a little too quickly for my tastes, it moves so quickly through the plot which is wholly based around the sex scene. It blew through the other events so fast that it didn't flow into Allison's rash decision of a one night stand. That being said it made it unbelievable to me.
It was however a quick read.
It could have been a really good book.
Good short story by the author that keeps the readers attention.
