Alas, every superstar has their imperfections. For Penny, her Achilles’ heel, her fatal flaw, was developed in her high school days with her first love. Penny feels deeply—that’s part of her charm. But sometimes in life, we give ourselves to those that don’t deserve it and in turn, their cruelty or betrayal can make us question ourselves and ultimately, shut down those parts of ourselves that make us who we are. Penny’s first love—not that he ever deserved that status—and his betrayal deeply impacted Penny’s ability to let another man in and show those vulnerabilities. For the ten years that followed, Penny has lived by the 3-date rule: three dates, move on. Until Bodie.
Bodie is your quintessential, “Beta in the Streets, Alpha in the Sheets” character—and is EXACTLY the kind of man Penny needs and deserves. Patient, loyal, kind, smart and sexy AF, Bodie truly gets Penny and understands that clipping a free spirit’s wings is no way to keep them grounded—at least not if one wants to preserve what makes them so special. Taming Penny is not the answer. Giving Penny the freedom to be who she is, while having the sense of security to comfortably stay put is the key to winning this girl’s heart. Allowing her to explore all aspects of herself, including her vulnerabilities, is vital for anything long-term. But, of course, both sides must understand the other and be the partner they need. The question is, can someone so wrapped up in their own needs and fears see what the other person needs? Ultimately, can Penny see what Bodie needs and be that for him, while fighting her own personal demons?
Bad Penny is a fun and sexy read that has so much more depth than I ever expected. Although, knowing this was a Staci Hart book, I should have known better. I highly recommend that you give Bad Penny a shot and I hope you love her as much as I do.
Staci Hart is quickly becoming one of the authors that I will read anything that she writes. So of course, I couldn't wait to get my hands on Bad Penny. What I didn't know is just how much I would fall in love with both the hero and the heroine. Seriously, that hardly ever happens but it sure did with Penny and Bodie.
The title is appropriately named because let's face it, Penny is bad. She lives her life exactly the way she wants to. Balls to the wall, Penny is sarcastic, witty, and downright shamelessly dirty and brash. And I love it! She owns who she is and doesn't let anyone tell her anything different. However, her past kind of pushed her to stave off men. Sure, she will serial date up to 3 dates. Her very own, very specific rule. She loves sex just like everyone else (actually probably way more) but she's not letting anyone get to her heart ever again. She didn't like who she was and who she became when she thought she was in love all those years ago so she makes a clean break each and every time. Until Bodie comes along.
Bodie is sexy, super intelligent, funny and sure knows how to handle women. Especially Penny. He had me melting from the get go. But what I really liked about him was the fact that he's cared for Penny since they were in high school. When he crosses paths with Penny many years later, he's no longer the chubby kid was always there for Penny when her boyfriend treated her like dirt. Now he looks like a model, is successful with his career and ultimate still wants to make sure Penny is cared for and loved.
I absolutely loved the banter between Penny and her girls and even Penny and Bodie. The things that they would say and do seriously had me laughing so hard. Add that one top of some epic pop culture references and I was hooked from the start. I mean, who won't fall in love with Staci Hart after relating Penny to Blanche from The Golden Girls. If I hadn't already been in love, it would have happened then.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Bad Penny delivers us a fun, quirky, sassy read packed with EXTREME heat and love and affections. You do not want to miss out on this book. You'll laugh. You'll swoon. You'll fan yourself and get all hot over Brodie's delicious ways. You'll ultimately fall in love. I will be recommending this to everyone.

There’s a lot of ways. Penny is the most badass, irreverent, unapologetically herself heroine that I’ve encountered in romance so far. She blows every stereotype out of the water and is both entertaining and inspiring. There’s something just so real about her voice, and I love that she never backed down from being the bold and brash firecracker that she is. She’s an embodiment of every woman’s right to be themselves, and I hope the world of romance novels gets more characters like her.
Another thing that had me shouting “YES!” while reading was what an important role female friendship played in the story. The bond Penny shares between her two best friends features prominently in the book, and I was so happy to see a group of woman sticking up for each other and making the same kind of inappropriate jokes I find myself making with my own friends. When reading about all their escapades, I couldn’t help but wish I wish the fourth roommate in the apartment, and I applaud Staci Hart for recognizing that the support women give to one another deserves a place in romance.
Of course, there is a love story in there too. Bodie was also an awesome character who had so many positive traits (and I’m not just talking about that hot bod). His willingness to accept Penny’s refusal to fit into any norms, and to respect her life choices even when they didn’t correlate to that of most girls, was very admirable. The relationship between the two forced both characters to grow and reflect on their own needs in a way I found realistic and engaging.
The writing of the story itself is beautiful, and I was constantly stopping to mark down my favourite quotes. Staci Hart has created something very special. Between the laughs, the cringes, and the triumphant air punches she inspires, Penny is truly a gift to any reader who meets her. I’m very glad to be one of them.
