Many years ago, our founder Bill Whyte worked as a carpenter. His hardworking hands would often split and crack in the freezing New England winters. Chalky but one of the BEST natural sunscreens...

There is a lot to like about this sunscreen, and some to not like so much.
First of all, I did a LOT of research into the best sunscreens that are free from all the yucky stuff. This one came out on top. It's not incredibly expensive. It has just a few ingredients and I can pronounce them all! But most important of all it does work. My son was out all day (7+hours) on a 100% sunny day, I applied before he left for the day and he never reapplied. He came home with no sunburn at all. I was nervous but it worked great. Just full disclosure, he was not sweaty and there was no water involved, so we didn't check out its waterproofness.
The bad: its chalky, really chalky. It's thick and you have to rub and rub and RUB to get this stuff to look even halfway decent on. My children still look chalky and white after I have rubbed it in for an eternity. It is not greasy or sticky however and they don't even think twice about it once it's done. I would buy this again but I tell you I dread putting it on. If it didn't work so well I would chunk it but there is always a little bad that goes with the good!

I live in SW Florida, am a cyclist and generally ride thirty-to-fifty miles three to four times per week. Long duration sun exposure is therefore a fact of life for me. I had successfully used Coppertone Sport 30SPF for years, but the product was reformulated and I started to itch and develop small bumps on my arms after using it. I tried a number of mainstream chemical (non-zinc) sunscreens and had similar results — and for some reason reacted so badly to Neutrogena products that I had to use Calamine lotion to stop the itching. My wife suggested a zinc based alternative and bought me three to try: Neutrogena Sheer Zinc, CeraVe Zinc and Badger. The Neutrogena and CeraVe products were easier to apply than the Badger and didn’t make me look as ghostly grey white — the sun protection was good but my skin still bumped and itched with both (although not as badly with the CeraVe). In comparison to the others, the Badger cream IS VERY THICK and takes some effort to apply evenly but it is also very obvious when you have applied it completely and in sufficient amounts. By “sufficient” I mean a discernible grey white layer covering all exposed areas. When applied this way, I have had wonderful results — absolutely no sunburn — and absolutely no skin irritation. The difference is so profound that I felt the need to write this review! Two more points - it does take some extra effort to get the cream off when showering — I generally use soap by itself first and then repeat with a soapy washcloth to get it off completely. Second — if you’re a cyclist, don’t forget to aggressively cover the back of your neck (right up into the hairline). I had a good friend develop melanoma in that area as it’s often underprotected and yet gets maximum exposure to the sun when you’re riding. Good luck!

Badger is by far the best sunscreen I have ever bought. You sometimes think something can't be cruelty free, reef safe, have natural ingredients good for sensitive skin, AND work the way it's supposed to, but I really can't commend this brand enough for pulling off just that.
The ONLY reason it gets 4 stars is because this active sport one is harder to rub in than pretty much any other variety so I wanted to write this review here, instead of under any of the other types I've bought over the years, to let people know. If you're just using this for the outdoors and don't want any scents to attract bugs and don't mind being white and streaky, this is fine. But if you wear natural sunscreen every day, choose literally any other type of Badger sunscreen and it goes on smoother and blends in better. It still is a non-nano mineral sunscreen so keep that in mind, but there is a difference between the consistency of the Sport (regardless of stick or tube) and the others. All the others I've ever tried are a solid 5 stars and there are circumstances for which I would give this 5 stars too, but not daily use.
Sometimes the tinted ones still don't blend in perfectly so a lot of the time I buy the regular white ones anyway. Plus if you prefer spf 30 over spf 15, there are more scent options in non-tinted varieties. Sometimes I buy the kids or babies' ones just for the scents and high spf.
If you can, rub some coconut or sweet almond oil on yourself right when you get out of the shower with your skin still warm and moist so it soaks in faster, and then when you're dry, put the sunscreen on. Especially if you have trouble with white streaks, it helps to have your skin moisturized before trying to put this on. But of course it is better to be white, streaky, and protected in any case than unprotected and burnt.

We used this suncream before kayaking; the instructions read that it should be reapplied after 80 mins of swimming. We followed the instructions exactly and in fact reapplied twice during our three hour kayaking because we could feel that we were burning; however on getting out it was clear that the suncream did absolutely nothing to protect from the sun. Myself and my partner are both badly burned and SO disappointed in this suncream, not to mention livid at the sun damage that's been done to our skin! This product needs to be taken off the market ASAP, do not buy.

Was travelling somewhere that needed a reef safe sunscreen and did a lot of research into which to get (As they are all a lot more expensive than ordinary sunscreen).
A lot of the reviews of the various reef safe creams seem to relate more to the type of sunscreen it is rather than the specifics of the sunscreen e.g. it leaves a white sheen (its going to, reef safe ones by the nature of the ingredients sit on the skin rather than being absorbed like conventional ones)
Anyway Badger sunscreen seemed to have good reviews from various independent sites and so far i'm really pleased with this one. It is quite thick and needs a bit of working around to spread it but a little bit goes covers a fair bit of skin (a 10mm squirt covered 1 forearm once worked in). It does leave a slight white / bluish residue on your skin but not to an extent that people are going to stop and stare, you can just tell that you have sunscreen on and its the nature of the reef safe recipe that you're inevitably going to get this.
Worked well at protecting from the sun if you follow the instructions and reapply as directed
