Mineral sunscreens use white powder like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (which this product does not contain the latter, which is a good thing in my book because it it potentially harmful to your skin). These white powders are based in oil, which makes them spreadable and helps nourish and protect the skin. They work by creating a whitish hue to your skin and effectively reflect the suns rays before it hits your skin. Badger contains non-Nano particle zinc oxide, which cannot be absorbed into the skin, but rather stays on the surface until rubbed off. Another nice thing about mineral sunblocks is that they are pretty safe to use for people with sensitive skin (mine is not). Most "sensitive" formulations of drugstore sunscreens use minerals to protect your skin. So it should not cause any reactions.
I have used this on my face and body. It does come out of the tube kind of pasty and thick, kind of like squeezing clay out of a toothpaste tube! When rubbing it in, it does require effort, but I have noticed that as long as you get a consistent coverage, the white-ness subsides a bit as the oil absorbs into your skin. I actually LIKE the white-ness of it for facial use. The powdery texture of the zinc oxide, though a bit white, tends to give the skin a matte finish, and reflects light, which should make wrinkles less noticeable. As long as it is on your skin, you can keep the matte finish and there's the added benefit of knowing that it is still working (since you can see the whitish tint to your skin). Personally, I wouldn't worry much about other people noticing the white, since you are your own worst critic. My boyfriend did not notice anything unusual about my skin when I switched to this brand--but then again, he is only a guy! They just don't notice those things! :-) I went out and about too, and no one stopped and pointed at me, and no children broke out in tears due to seeing a ghost! So I think it is safe to assume that only I noticed the whitish hue.
I also like that a little bit goes a long way, so 3 oz will last quite well. I also like that it stays put and does not run into your eyes and make them water, which is my biggest annoyance with any sunscreen!
I might also mention the four ingredients that base this sunscreen; this is a short list of only four ingredients too. Sunflower oil protects the skin from bacteria (meaning it can prevent acne) and free radicals, which can damage the cells of your skin and it makes an effective moisturizer. Beeswax is a thickening agent--probably to blame for the thickness, but it comes with added benefits such as antibacterial, healing, and moisturizing properties. Jojoba oil is the closest in consistency and pH to our skin's natural oils and is noted for its moisturizing capabilities, plus it has some natural sun protective properties. Finally, tocopherol--or in English, Vitamin E oil is GREAT for your skin! I sometimes use it at night as a vegetable (sunflower) based alternative to Retinol (which is animal based), and the results are about the same. It helps moisture and improves cell turnover. I like how moisturized my skin looks and feels after using it, only without causing a shiny face that oils can cause.
Now the drawbacks--which are what prompted me to give it four stars--is that after using it, if you itch your arm or any part that it has been applied to, you will get white dust under your fingernails. A little annoying to me, and as mentioned earlier, it is a little bothering how slowly it comes out of the tube. Realistically speaking, however I "normally" use a brand that costs twice the amount of this one. It works better, but I really cannot compare it to Badger due to price difference.
The "null" features to me were scent--there is hardly a trace of any discernible scent. It's very benign and hard to place. Natural oatmeal I guess? So I doubt the smell would bother anyone. All in all, I really do like it. Although there is a notable (apparently to me only) whitish hue, I am willing to accept this because the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.
UPDATE: I bought a bottle of Climb On! sunblock, and a bottle of Aryu-veda sunblock. I would rate them as Aryu-veda #1 (of course it costs $28/ 4-oz bottle), Badger #2, and Climb On! #3. All three have non-nano zinc oxide as the active ingredient and do their job. All three seem to limit UV damage and are very natural, without chemical or dangerous ingredients. Mostly, their differences lie in consistency. Aryu-Veda goes on smoothly and moisturizes REALLY WELL all day. Badger is thick and pasty going on, and you have to rub it in. It leaves a whitish hue, but stays put really well. It probably has the most zinc oxide of the three. Climb On! goes on smoothly, but has an oily consistency, runs a little, and causes breakouts. So Badger is a really good value AND it performs pretty well, but I wouldn't say it's an excellent moisturizer.
The ONLY reason it gets 4 stars is because this active sport one is harder to rub in than pretty much any other variety so I wanted to write this review here, instead of under any of the other types I've bought over the years, to let people know. If you're just using this for the outdoors and don't want any scents to attract bugs and don't mind being white and streaky, this is fine. But if you wear natural sunscreen every day, choose literally any other type of Badger sunscreen and it goes on smoother and blends in better. It still is a non-nano mineral sunscreen so keep that in mind, but there is a difference between the consistency of the Sport (regardless of stick or tube) and the others. All the others I've ever tried are a solid 5 stars and there are circumstances for which I would give this 5 stars too, but not daily use.
Sometimes the tinted ones still don't blend in perfectly so a lot of the time I buy the regular white ones anyway. Plus if you prefer spf 30 over spf 15, there are more scent options in non-tinted varieties. Sometimes I buy the kids or babies' ones just for the scents and high spf.
If you can, rub some coconut or sweet almond oil on yourself right when you get out of the shower with your skin still warm and moist so it soaks in faster, and then when you're dry, put the sunscreen on. Especially if you have trouble with white streaks, it helps to have your skin moisturized before trying to put this on. But of course it is better to be white, streaky, and protected in any case than unprotected and burnt.
First of all, I did a LOT of research into the best sunscreens that are free from all the yucky stuff. This one came out on top. It's not incredibly expensive. It has just a few ingredients and I can pronounce them all! But most important of all it does work. My son was out all day (7+hours) on a 100% sunny day, I applied before he left for the day and he never reapplied. He came home with no sunburn at all. I was nervous but it worked great. Just full disclosure, he was not sweaty and there was no water involved, so we didn't check out its waterproofness.
The bad: its chalky, really chalky. It's thick and you have to rub and rub and RUB to get this stuff to look even halfway decent on. My children still look chalky and white after I have rubbed it in for an eternity. It is not greasy or sticky however and they don't even think twice about it once it's done. I would buy this again but I tell you I dread putting it on. If it didn't work so well I would chunk it but there is always a little bad that goes with the good!
I try to be super honest and helpful in my reviews, if it was helpful please click YES! Thanks!

A lot of the reviews of the various reef safe creams seem to relate more to the type of sunscreen it is rather than the specifics of the sunscreen e.g. it leaves a white sheen (its going to, reef safe ones by the nature of the ingredients sit on the skin rather than being absorbed like conventional ones)
Anyway Badger sunscreen seemed to have good reviews from various independent sites and so far i'm really pleased with this one. It is quite thick and needs a bit of working around to spread it but a little bit goes covers a fair bit of skin (a 10mm squirt covered 1 forearm once worked in). It does leave a slight white / bluish residue on your skin but not to an extent that people are going to stop and stare, you can just tell that you have sunscreen on and its the nature of the reef safe recipe that you're inevitably going to get this.
Worked well at protecting from the sun if you follow the instructions and reapply as directed

It is horrid to apply. It's like smothering yourself in toothpaste. You finish looking like a white walker out of Game of Thrones and to finish you get bad sunburn.
Very expensive item that is as useful as a chocolate teapot.
