Bailey thinks she has her life completely planned in an orderly fashion. She knows she does not want to be like her needy mother. Bailey has plans! She wants to be independent, unlike her mother who has sadly followed an unfulfilled dream for many years.
The story opens with Bailey as a third year law student studying for her exams. She has no money left after paying her monthly bills, and lives in a tiny, tiny apartment in San Francisco in a sketchy part of town.
One day her life changes in a most unexpected, and unwanted, way. Hilarious distractions start happening, and escalating, moment by moment. There are times during this story I teared up with laughter as she tries to right her personal ship and get control of an out-of-control situation that has landed on her lap. Three new characters enter her life at almost the same exact day and she finds she needs them all in different ways.
Believe me..... you will love this book. It is a fast read, very, very entertaining and well worth the time. You will want to purchase the next two books, as well. Highly recommended.
I really didn't like Bailey very much. She talked a lot about not having a family, but then she sends Seymour away, after she spends a few days treating him like a parasite that is ruining her life. She also seems to loathe herself quite a bit, and has meticulously planned out her life around a career she doesn't love just because it will get her material things.
The first person present tense writing style also put me off to the book. It made it choppy, and like the title character was just giving random statements about what she was doing at that second. I couldn't get the flow that I needed to bond with the book.
The saving grace that kept me reading was Seymour. I absolutely adored him. He was sweet and funny, but tough as nails. I would absolutely love to read a novel about some of his adventures on his travels.
As always, Ms. Forster has fully developed all the characters. Bailey tells her own story in the first person, so you get to know her very well, and she is totally lovable! You just have to root for her! She’s a dedicated, logical, hard-working person who has the most illogical, crazy things happen to her. And she learns to enjoy life along the way. There are many wonderful, quirky characters who become part of Bailey’s life. You feel like you know them and love them all, even the quirkiest! You even feel that you know her beloved dreamer of a mother, although she is traveling the world and isn’t ever actually present. Bailey’s flashbacks tell you a lot about her mom and their very special relationship.
The books are often laugh-out-loud hilarious, at times tear-worthy sentimental, but always completely delightful! And book three has a lovely “bow” ending! Wonderful!
