K-Gr 1—Bailey is a handsome young dog who accompanies a class of human children on a visit to a museum of natural history. Being a dog, he sometimes lacks focus, although the call of "squirrel" will quickly regain his attention. When Bailey falls asleep, his keen sense of smell reunites him with the class. Though Kirby Heyborne's narration is well paced and expressively voiced, without the cartoon illustrations of the picture book, young listeners are not likely to know what some of the museum pieces (a dream catcher) look like. The listening experience will be enhanced by keeping a copy of the print book nearby.—Maria Salvadore, formerly of the Washington, DC Public Library --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.
Bailey, the only canine member of his otherwise human grade-school class, wags his tail excitedly as their bus pulls up to the Museum of Natural History. When his interest in dinosaur bones gets the better of him, he climbs the T. rex for a taste and ends up with a museum guard as his field-trip partner. Luckily, they get along just fine. They lose sight of the class near the end of the visit, but Bailey’s superior nose and tracking skills save the day. Told through short lines of text combined with speech and word bubbles in the pictures, the rambling story gets its spark from the expressive, cartoonlike illustrations. Varying in size from broad double-page scenes to small pictures grouped on one page, the colorful artwork creates a mildly amusing tone and offers plenty of details for children to enjoy. An amiable picture-book adventure. Preschool-Grade 2. --Carolyn Phelan

My son has requested me to read him Bailey at the Museum every night since we got it. The illustration are pure Harry Bliss, and, as with all his books, there are some really clever gags inserted for the grown ups.
Hope they Bailey books keep coming.
The thing that struck me the most about this book was that all the characters loved to read! All the kids are reading graphic novels and comic books on the bus ride. Even the museum guard whips out a book about how to guard things during his lunch break. Easy to read with large illustrations and clear speech bubbles, this is a nice selection for kids who aren't quite ready for graphic novels yet.
