Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2–In this picture book/song combo, various adults attempt to mollify hungry, crying youngsters with the promise of pie. There is no story, just an accumulation of 11 verses, each consisting of a rhyming quatrain and a repeated refrain. Presented on individual spreads, each one features a particular child (or animal, or object) matched with an appropriate dessert. For example, Hank, a sweet little cowboy, is offered a cactus meringue pie; Luciano, a tenor, is promised an eggplant parmesan concoction; and Pearl, a rock star, is tempted with a tangerine tambourine treat. On the audio CD, each verse is presented in a musical style that matches its content: Hank's is performed as country, Luciano's as opera, and Pearl's as rock 'n' roll. These renditions are not always successful, and the Cajun and techno interpretations, in particular, fall flat. The second cut provides instrumental reprises of the song and a third is a vocal solo. Although the acrylic and colored-pencil illustrations are colorful and exciting, they do not relieve the tedium of the text and the music.–Linda Staskus, Parma Regional Library, OH

Didn't come with CD , as stated in the description of the item being sold. Very disappointing! The book is cute, but it is one of those books that you really do need the CD, because it is about different genres of music. It still states that on the site that I purchased the book, that this book comes with a CD. Future buyers watch out for this one! I just thought you might like to know that some of the books don't come with CD. Very disappointing!!!

Add me to the list of unhappy buyers. Before I purchased, I tried to verify with the seller that the cd was included, AS IN THE ITEM DESCRIPTION; but the seller claimed s/he had no way to do that. I took the gamble and I lost. No cd. Book alone is of minimal use in my classroom without the cd.

I am a music teacher and even my 5th graders love this book! It even works great as a little "quiz"...I gave them the style choices and they had to guess which was which. Even adults get a kick out of it!

Perfect book for a brief overview of musical genres. This book features a simple refrain that is repeated on each page using a new style of music- bluegrass, gospel, rock, opera, country, acapella, and techno. Instruments characteristic of the style are also featured in the illustrations as well as in the recording. Length of story song is approx 6 minutes.

The reviewer from School Library Journal is apparently not keyed into the fact that young children ADORE repetition (and in fact, need repetition for brain stimulation). This is my 3-year-old's absolute favorite book--and my 6-year-old loves it too. We have read this charming story so many times that we all know it by heart. The illustrations are spectacular, and the CD is a delicious bonus.

I tried out Bake You a Pie on my granddaughter and grandson. They clapped, they giggled and they asked that it be read over and over again. Now that's a testimony for a children's book.

There's rhythm and rhyme in Bake You a Pie. Baby Sam; Grace, the little angel; the tenor, Luciano; Louis, the hepcat; Hank, the cowboy; Jolie, a sweet crawfish; Buddy, the hound dog; Pearl, the rock star; Gizmo, the robot; Smelly, the garbage truck; and Junior, the little giant, were all so hungry, they got pies that were made just for them.

Now those pies were all different. One was blueberry, another was sweet potato, another was eggplant parmesan and yet another was a cactus meringue. Oh, and there's more whimsical pies to be found in this book. But you'll have to read it to discover what they are.

Bake You a Pie is great fun and the illustrations are colorful and quirky. As an added bonus, the book comes with a delightful CD with delightful performances of the different musical genres included in the book.

Armchair Interviews says: Kids are going to get a kick out of Bake You a Pie.
