Disclaimer: This book was provided by Baker Books. I was under no obligation to offer a favorable review.
First, the design. Every page has a helpful illustration, chart or picture. Whether you are studying the succession within the Herodian dynasty or the kings of Israel there is a helpful chart to make sense of it all. From an educational standpoint the combination of pictures, charts and illustrations alongside text provides diversity of reinforcement. It is easier to understand and remember the information about Egyptian hieroglyphics when there's a chart summarizing the information and pictures illustrating it.
Second, the organization. I have seen some handbooks organized like an encyclopedia - by entry. This can be helpful but not as much as the book by book organization of the Baker Bible Handbook. They follow the books of the Bible so that you can easily find the section on Nehemiah and walls in the ancient near east while also reading Nehemiah. This common sense organization makes it truly a handbook.
Third, the information. This is a well-written and helpful resource. It reads more like a commentary than merely a handbook. Plus, with the diversity and excellence of scholarship represented by the contributors to this volume, you can rest assured that you have access to some of the best evangelical scholarship.
This is a great addition to the library of any pastor, professor, church leader or educated lay-person. Understanding the Bible is an essential commodity in church life today and resources like this one make it much easier.

I just noticed that they have upgraded the book, and now all the table of contents and links work. I use it on my android phone. Good going. No reason now to hesitate buying.
This book should not be viewed as highly scholarly, as it does not delve deeply into technical details of authorship, historical background, textual issues, etc. But I would say that this would be a great companion textbook to any introductory survey through either Testament.
This is a welcome addition to my library, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a resource or study aid made at this level.
Bible handbooks are one of the most useful tools, and one of the most overlooked--these helpful volumes compile a great deal of general information about Bible books and key passages, along with brief explanations about certain terminology and tips for reading and interpreting the Scriptures all in one compact volume. Handbooks don't provide the depth of information one might find in a commentary, nor the detailed definitions of a Bible dictionary, but for a one-stop resource, it's hard to do better than a good Bible handbook.
As a seminary educated minister, I say this without hesitation: The Baker Illustrated Bible Handbook is probably the best of its kind.
This is a beautiful volume. Its glossy pages are splashed with full color photos and easy to read type, along with each of its major divisions marked with a color-coded stripe at the bottom of the page for easy access to needed materials. The scholarship in the volume is second-to-none, and because it holds a 2011 copyright, that scholarship is completely up-to-date. Add to that a remarkably solid binding and a reasonable weight, and you have a book that is imminently useful and portable for its size.Read more ›
