About the author

Squids, bread, and hot air balloon have little in common... except how much nerdy squeeing they can draw out of Claudie. Excitable and passionate, Claudie writes quirky science-fiction and fantasy that lets the best tropes shine through, haters be damned, and her love for sprawling casts invariably turns her novels into multi-storylined wonders.
As an aromantic and asexual writer, she gives full breadth to stories that centre platonic relationships and is well-known for her database of aro and ace characters. Claudie is also a founding member of The Kraken Collective, a group of indie writers who love queer SFF, and she is devoted to its promotion.

My point here is that The Baker Thief is a highly enjoyable read. I think its strongest components are the thoughtful emotions behind the major characters and the excellent representation across the board. When a character gets injured, they're worried about their pet iguana back at home. When a character experiences something traumatic, they need to take time to heal mentally. There's a lot of familial, platonic, and demi-romantic love flowing from this book. Without spoiling anything, your heart will likely be warmed, and there will also be character traits that you realize aren't often included in more popular stories.
On top of all of this: Trigger warnings before the story begins? Sign me up! I'm honestly surprised more books don't do this. So nice to see. As mentioned before, the representation is top notch. Folks with missing limbs, asthma, people from marginalized groups, and practically a whole walkthrough on the lesser known areas of the gender / sexual orientation / romantic spectrums. All great things and more stories need to take notes on this level of inclusivity.
However, and I truly mean absolutely no offense by this, The Baker Thief simply isn't a masterpiece in my eyes. There aren't too many surprises in terms of plot, and some characters are really fleshed out while others are a little more one-dimensional. And I did find some passages or plot elements to get just a touch repetitive. Under other circumstances, this book feels like a 3/5 for me. And I wish this didn't sound so harsh because I really did like the book!
However, the trigger warnings, thoughtful character traits, and great representation made the story feel so refreshing that the impact of these features deserve their own commendation. This is a solid story that absolutely adds to the tapestry of better representation in fiction and more emotional characters. So I'll bump up what would have been a 3 to a 4.
Despite some of the heavy themes throughout the book, it's more of a light read in my eyes and I highly recommend that you give it a try. I can guarantee that you'll think to yourself how some of the reactions these characters have are more human than what plenty of other fiction would otherwise gloss over. This book taught me a lot and I hope it does the same for you.
All in all I enjoyed this twisty mystery, and I look forward to reading more of Arseneault's work in the future!
It is fast-paced, but not short. It has romance in some ways, but the only romantic relationships in the entire book are mentioned in passing.
There is more strong discussion of sex and desire, than romance.
This is a well-written, well-thought out book, with interesting and relatable characters. There is a wonderful diversity in characters and their personalities, too.
I honestly don't have the words to describe how amazing this book is. I'm so glad I read it.
Be aware that you may end up using translate for the chapter titles, as they're in French, and a basic understanding of French will really improve your experience of the book. that said, I don't think you need to know French to read it. (I took all of two years of French back in high school, and I haven't used it in six years)
Be aware that the beginning will be confusing. Everything will make sense very soon. Just stick with it.
Instead of rambling on and on, I'm just going to recommend you buy it.

High quality writing style and plot.
Can a baker-by-day, thief-by-night citizen and the city's newest cop uncover the truth while keeping those they care about safe?

This book is full of LGBTQIA+ representation that feels both authentic and mundane.
I say 'mundane' with much approval. It's so refreshing to see a cast of characters that are as diverse as real life and treated in a way that doesn't require justification or explanation.
This story includes characters who are genderfluid, non-binary, demisexual, use non-traditional pronouns, and more.
The aromantic representation, in particular, I found really well done - “Powerful love comes in many forms, and not all of them need to be romantic. I daresay most aren’t.”
The story itself is compelling, the world building is fascinating, and the characters are relatable and interesting.
I did feel like it dragged a little during the third quarter, but overall, I enjoyed it quite a lot.
