Editorial Reviews

2011 two CD collection mixed by Henry Saiz. The Spanish electronic producer brings his unique formula to the esteemed mix series with an exciting conceptualized approach. Through attempting to occupy the creative space closer to that of an artist album, rather than a club mix, Henry has delicately created an odyssey in sound.

I haven't written a review for an electronic two disc set in years. The last disc I commented on was Hernan Cattaneo's 1st Renaissance Set back in 2003 while I was a student in College. I will just jot down some emotions that you feel when you listen to some of the tracks:

Disc One

- Mystical Tree - definitely feels like you're under a mystical tree, very ethereal sense of being

- 1981 - not quite transported back to the 80's, but the swinging noise in the background places you into a deep trance

- Honey Wine - a very nifty deep house track with hints of Calderone, Sasha's Airdrawndagger, and Moshic's Hiloola all thrown in for a really terrific eight minute track

- Little Mountains - same artists at Mystical Tree, a very guitar and synthesizer heavy song. Fits perfectly after Honey Wine

- Onice - a good break before things get really twisted again

- Lady in the Mirror - gives you a sense you're in an old European high floor apartment's bathroom looking into an old chalky mirror, while still churning a good dance rhythm

- Black Heart - 90's house beat with some really effected vocals makes for a great trip into outer space mid way through the first disc

- Letting Go - a break beat song that's both relaxing and soulful

- Eterno Retorno - Must be heard to understand, words don't suffice.

Admittedly, it took some time for me to completely and thoroughly get this compilation, sometimes these things happen to even the best of us who believe that we are experts on electronica. However, am I glad it hit me during a listening session, which I treat myself to once in a while. You see, for me it was the careful and attentative listening to Henry Saiz B19 that revealed the radiance of its artistry in sound.

CD1..More of an old school analog sound, and I would definitely agree with other reviewers that it is theatrical and dreamy but never shying away from being techy or minimalistic. "Lady in the mirror" is the highlight of the first CD. All in all, CD1 is simply beautiful.

CD2..Nothing in this better half of the compilation get anything less than 5 stars. What a joy it is to get inside the mind of the DJ to understand his purpose, his thoughts and his feelings without reading a word he wrote or watch a scene he shot or listen to word he spoke. All of that is done through non-verbal eclectic sound of electronica.

May I have seconds, please.

Nice innovating sound. Some tracks are just pure masterpieces. Most tracks are produced/remixed by Henry Saiz himself or under his pseudonym Hal Incandenza, which gives the cd a very personal touch. Darker/repetetive tech is alternated by beautiful melodic sounds. Personal favorites are:
Cora Novoa & Spaceman - Black Heart (Henry Saiz's 95 Cassette Rework)
Henry Saiz - Eterno Retorno [90's Acid Trance Version]
Sistema - Nodo 6 (Henry Saiz Balance Rework)
Calypso Synth Ensemble - Gaia
Eelke Kleijn - Lone Ranger [Henry Saiz Ocean Drive Remix]

I recommend this cd!

I know on some of my reviews I say its a great album and they really are to me but this one is in a whole other category. I've like Henry Saiz's production for a few years now and like his laybrinth podcast so when I saw this was coming out (less than 2 months after Nick Warren's 018 which is good to) I knew I had to get it. Man this comp is straight up out of this world good and for people that miss the old Balance series sound your in for a treat. The way he constructed this mix is truly unique in that he used a lot of vinyl and cassette tapes to give it an analog sound which in turn makes the album sound more warm and organic. He said that he likes to and I quote "evocative power to send you back to your childhood or to a specific moment of your life," which he does a masterful job at. Some of the tracks have that new wave 80's and old rave and techno from the 90's sound with the bass lines and synths he plays along with some old school acid house sounds as well.

The first disc is my favorite one as it has a lot of the qualities I previously stated above. The intro is some old like radio tv show recordings of people talking with some white noise and other sounds its very cool. All the tracks have such a warm and natural feel to them and the analog sound just really puts this mix over the top.

Disc two is very good also with more of a tech house sound but all the aforementioned qualities still apply. I really like when it gets to Eelke Kleijn - Lone Ranger (Henry Saiz Ocean Drive Remix) and he mixes into Mono Electric Orchestra - Indifference (Henry Saiz Queztalli Rework) just love thoughs two tracks.
