On the other hand, these lids will serve some purpose. I make my own baby food and these lids are simpler to handle than the 2-part canning lids if you are not canning. And once my baby outgrows baby food, I can use the lids for opened homemade jams that were previously canned in the same jars - they are easy to use and easy to open so even my older toddler can open on his own to spread his own jam (probably the reason they are not airtight). Now I just have to figure out a way to transport to daycare without liquids spilling all over.
And here is my pet peeve. The jars come in dozens, why do these lids come in 8-packs? Maybe 4-packs so you can chose to buy 4, 8, or 12. But an 8-pack? If I want lids for all of my 12 jars, I have to buy 16 lids...
If you're canning, of course you want the traditional two part metal lids, but for other uses where you need to get into the jar frequently, this one part plastic lid is ideal. I use my jars for dozens of purposes, and like the convenience of this lid. When I make a smoothie in my big blender, there is always enough for multiple portions so I put the excess in pint or even quart jars in the fridge for subsequent days. I store screws and nails in jars in my tool drawer. I freeze chicken stock and soup in the jars. I use them for fresh squeezed juice. The list goes on and on. I was buying speciality jars for my skin cream when giving it as gifts, but found the half cup ball jars were far more economical and work well with these lids. They are also great for dressings I've made where a bigger jar would be too much of a good thing.
The glass jars are great for storage of many things, are easy to wash and are endlessly reusable so having caps that work with them and are also easy to wash (do fine in the dishwasher) and reuse is important. These are great as are the wide mouth version.
But let's be realistic. These are plastic caps. Run 'em through the dishwasher enough times and they'll start to warp. Perhaps not much, but enough that you don't want to store things upside down in a soft moving container.
These caps are fine for their obvious purpose -- covering things which were previously home-canned after they've been opened and while they're being stored right-side up in the fridge. They're also more than sufficient for covering the jars if they've been filled with something else, so long as you're storing it in a normal environment. I wouldn't hesitate to shake the jar to mix a salad dressing or something. They're probably not sufficient for toting stuff around or laying on their sides like wine bottles. Two caveats: One, they're more brittle than they look. A simple drop of a refrigerated, covered jar broke the cap but not the jar. Two, the lids and jar threads have to be completely clean for the seal to hold. There's *no* leeway the way there is with a metal lid.
Happily, that's better than the performance I expected for 70 cents/cap. It's nice to be able to throw my rings back in with the unused jars and throw the lids in the recycling bin.
