I use the smaller jars for parfaits and other things. In an effort to safe space I decided to purchase these to store other things such as my flour, sugar, oats etc. I opened this box to find 1 of the jars broken. Not sure if it happened during delivery or during my move but one did not survive. Hopefully future orders will either be packed better or handled more carefully. I tried to get an exchange because I didn’t necessarily want to return them but the option wasn’t available. Either way these are good jars.

I am just getting into canning and storing dry goods. Somewhat of a newbie prepper. I started with canning with the pint size jars and now that I'm getting more into preserving food I recently purchased these Ball wide mouth half gallon jars. They are huge and are definitely what I'm now needing to secure my bulk food. Also I'm glad I purchased the wide mouth jars because it makes them easier to be filled. I use them for storing my cooked and dehydrated pasta, rice, cereal, dehydrated onions, mushrooms, vegetables, meat, jerky, as well as storing my tea bags and leaves to keep them fresh. Using these Ball wide mouth jars with my Food Saver vacuum sealer is the perfect combination for keep all of my food fresher for a longer period of time. I also dehydrate vegetables for my two dogs and these keep their treats fresh while sitting on the counter. After getting a few out I use the vacuum sealer and reseal the jars to prevent any spoilage. I will soon be using these for storing meals and salads in a jar. Found a few videos on storing meals in these and was intrigued. I write on the lids of the jars with a dry erase marker which comes off easily with a little soap and water. I also sometimes use a sharpie/ permanent marker to write on the glass and that removes quickly with a dab of hand sanitizer.
I would like to also have the 4oz jelly jars for my seasonings and peppers but it does not look like they are sold here in the wide mouth size. These wide mouth jars hold 64 ounces with airspace between the lid and whatever you have in the jar. Also the wide mouth lids will fit all of the other Ball wide mouth jar sizes.
They arrived in good condition, no breakage.

decent jars for price, for water Kefir, but BPA lids, and Metallic taste?

Hey, I have been enjoying the jars, for the most part, however, what type of metal are the lids? I use this for brewing water kefir. I do not use any metal utensils to stir or anything because I know it is reactionary, especially with aluminum. I like to do two different processes. For the second fermentation in which I put the lid on to let the kefir carbonate, sometimes the kefir begins to taste like blood - its a metallic taste, that's really the best way to describe it. It's awful and it hurts my teeth and makes me wince. Absolutely ruins the kefir. I find the less acidic the kefir is, the less I have the problem. I do the secondary fermentation for about 2-3 days and let out the built up C02 about once per day with this method and my theory is that when the kefir fizzes up, it touches some of the metal from the lid, reacts with it, and then drops back down. I think this would only make sense though if the lids were aluminum and I feel like a company that makes canning jars would be smart enough to know that acids can cause nickel to release into the product. I can't believe that this information is not available. I'm appalled actually that I can't just look up online what kind of metal the lid is. This information should be free to consumers.

Also I'm a little disturbed that there is BPA in the lids. Very disconcerting especially since I'm creating a chemical process that makes other chemicals leech out into my product. I mean, seriously, after all the trouble I've gone through to get ORGANIC ingredients for health reasons, and then there is a potential carcinogen in the lid of my jar. The irony. I think this is morally reprehensible to include this chemical into a product used to STORE FOOD!!! Haha, but don't get me started. From now on I will be brewing the Kefir in a one stage process without the lid on. I will put the flavoring ingredients in organic muslin bags so that it doesn't mix with the grains, and then I will bottle it and let the bottles sit out for a while in order to carbonate. This seems like a safer option and would hopefully solve the issue with the BPA and the metallic taste. Hope this review is enlightening to someone.

I knew what was coming when I ordered these, and thus when I got them I was excited when 1 jar was broken because it meant 5 were in good condition. 5/6 is passing I guess

The packaging of the jars are sub-par to say the least. No padding between the jars, they are just in a flat all 6 next to eachother, in a firm 2x3 orientation. This flat is put into another box which uses folded up cardboard to pad the space between the mason jar box and shipping box. Not good.

Regarding the jars themselves they are sturdy and well made. I've come to really enjoy them I got one as a gift awhile back and they have come in handy for storing large quantities of liquid like lemonade or chili oil, and I'm looking forward to trying to make preserved lemons. Because of this I ordered this pack, so if you can get your hands on them they are worth it.

The wide mouth opening also makes it easy to clean for a majority of people, unless you have massive hands.
