The low voltage don't leave enough heat to feel on the spreaders, unlike some that I've used, that required their own fan cooler.
These have turned out to be the easiest memory sticks I have used recently.
The modules are low profile, they are shorter than the retention tabs, by a few mm's and should clear any cooler you can fit in your box.
They work well, and have easily passed all the tests I could come up with.
The memory is not advertised as a good over clocker, but I had no trouble with 1866, still at 1.35v.
I have used these in 2 different 970 boards, ASRock Extreme4 (Rev 1.x) with current bios, and a GIGABYTE GA-970A-UD3 (Rev 1.1).
The Gigabyte did require an update from my 7-C beta drivers dated 07-12-2012, to the full version F-7 dated 10-22-2012 just fyi.
With bios set to xmp 1.3, the following was @ 1.35v at first boot on both motherboards.
The xmp 1.4 profile defaults voltage to 1.5v, on both mobo's I've tested.
The following reading is from Speccy, but are ident. to CPU-Z (ver 1.62) results.
Size 16384 MBytes
Channels # Dual
DRAM Frequency 805.5 MHz
CAS# Latency (CL) 9 clocks
RAS# to CAS# Delay (tRCD) 9 clocks
RAS# Precharge (tRP) 9 clocks
Cycle Time (tRAS) 24 clocks
Bank Cycle Time (tRC) 39 clocks
I'm one to have a side window so I can show off the "mod of the day", but you have to look twice to even notice this low profile memory.
Mine where shipped from The Cincinati area, to Tulsa in a bubble mailer, well protected, in a sturdy clamshell and 'POST'ed fine, first try.
I hope you get the same milage, good luck.
To top it off, they come w/ a few overclocking profiles, so you can run these at 1866 w/ 1.5V instead of the lower power 1.35.
Crucial did a great job...I'd buy these again w/o thinking twice :-)
Fed up with that, returned the bad RAM, I decided to try Crucial RAM instead. I got it on sale for a great price, but what really attracted me to it was the very low voltage and that it is made in the USA. The fact that it is very low profile was a bonus. It is so low-profile it is barely as tall as the clips that hold it onto the motherboard! The previous RAM plus head spreaders were more than twice as tall as these.
I put all 4 sticks in my motherboard, reset all BIOS settings to default, set it to D.O.C.P. mode and chose the XMP profile, voila. Everything just worked perfectly on the very first try with no manual tweaking at all. The full 32GB set runs at the advertised speeds and voltage, I didn't have to under-clock it or feed it extra voltage like many other brands require when using 4 sticks. I left memtest86+ 4.20 go overnight and I was a happy person when I woke up in the morning and saw no errors at all. For good measure I let it run several hours in memtest86+ 5.00rc1as well which does some new and different tests (and multi-core tests), and it also passed 100%.
32GB of RAM is amazing, I can give my virtual machines 8GB of RAM each and still have plenty left over for everything else. I can store an entire 25GB Blu-Ray disc image on a RAM drive.
This kit BLS4C8G3D1609ES2LX0 appears to be exactly the same as BLS4K8G3D1609ES2LX0 which is how some other retailers (and crucial's website) have it listed.
So, thumbs up. I have zero complaints about this product so far. Hopefully it will last me many years.
I purchased 2, single sticks of this at 4gb each, for a total of 8gb. Look at that option... it may make more sense, economically. Even if you don't need the low profile, it's nice and makes your build that much easier or at least nicer looking. I'm all about minimalism for aesthetics in a computer, so the flashy stuff doesn't do much for me. These do have aluminum 'heat' spreaders on them, which are only nice as they make it easier to grip onto for install/removal. RAM hasn't produced enough heat in years to need a heat sink to remove it. Trust me, it doesn't.
The one caveat and I think why this received very bad press on other sites and has some bad reviews here (not that they aren't deserved) is this won't run on the XMP at 1.35v. They promote this as a feature and less volts means less heat and longer life, but it doesn't seem to run. My first mobo I had (placeholder) ran these fan and booted them at the 1.5v automatically - it may not even have been able to use them at 1.35v. What was going to be my new board, wouldn't boot these at 1.5v and caused massive issues. I couldn't change the XMP setting in the bios. So, I returned the board and purchased a better one. Go in, change it to 1.5v, and it's happy as can be. So, that removes 1 star as it's clearly a feature they promote, yet has major issues.
