Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 1–4—It's 1927 in the Bronx, and George Henry Alexander loves baseball, the Yankees, and, most of all, The Bambino a.k.a. Babe Ruth. For his birthday, he will be going to see a Yankees/Red Sox game with his father, but to his horror, his mother insists that he wear a Red Sox jersey that was a birthday gift. How will George survive wearing the jersey of the enemy? What if The Babe sees him? This story is beautifully written and full of nostalgia, and the book's illustrations expertly depict the main characters. Jason Alexander's narration is the icing on the cake, adding fun character voices and New York accents to this tale of Americana. Students and adults of all ages will enjoy listening, especially anyone with ties to the Red Sox/Yankees century-old rivalry. This work is a true gem.—Jessica Gilcreast, Bedford High School, Bedford, New Hampshire

From Booklist

What’s a Yankees fan doing in a Red Sox jersey? For his tenth birthday, George received both a dream and a nightmare. The dream: a pair of tickets to a Yankees game. The nightmare, for a true-blue fan: a Red Sox jersey and cap from a Boston uncle. Looking back at his childhood in the Bronx in 1927, the elderly storyteller recalls that summer. When he resisted the shirt, he got his mouth washed out with soap for “talking back.” In spite of his having to wear the hateful colors, his first-ever trip to a baseball game and a conversation with his hero, Babe Ruth, made for a day he never forgot. The narrator’s discomfort and embarrassment are realistic, as is Ruth’s advice. In Pullen’s stylized oil paintings, facial features are exaggerated and expressive. These elements add plenty of humor to this nostalgic and heartwarming story for fans of any age. Extra innings: the book jacket becomes a poster, and the book comes with a CD of the story, ably narrated by actor Jason Alexander. Grades 2-4. --Kathleen Isaacs

This is a well-told picture book story about a baseball-loving 10 year old boy living in the Bronx in 1927. His hero is Babe Ruth and his excitement about his birthday gift of tickets to see the Yankee-Red Sox game is tempered by his mother’s insistence that George wear his uncle’s gift, a Red Sox jersey, to the game. But when it turns out he seems to have jinxed the Red Sox, the boo’s of his neighbors turns to cheers for him. And when he gets to meet the Babe his joy is uncontainable. The artwork is interesting, as is the technique of using walnut oil in the painting. Although I felt the author was stronger at painting portraits of adults than of children, that wasn’t a distraction. The author did a “swell” job of conveying the historical details and the slang of the 1920’s. Originally published in Canada, this book should have an enthusiastic audience in the US. This would be a perfect book to read aloud to compare and contrast baseball in the 1920’s and now. (LibraryThing review copy)

The Bambino and Me is a wonderfully written children's book about the power of a hero to a young boy.
The boy, George, is a ten year old Yankee fan in 1927. He is a fan of baseball, but unfortunately is an "easy out" when he comes up to bat at the local field with the rest of his friends.
For his birthday, his parents saved money to send him to a Boston Red Socks vs. the Yankees. His uncle sent him a birthday gift of a Red Socks hat and jersey. The book relays the tale of how Babe Ruth ended up with the Yankees in 1919. George is a Yankees/Babe Ruth fan and is mortified to have to wear a Red Socks hat and jersey to the game. He is the only one in the stands in Red Socks gear, but has a connection with The Babe when he steps up to bat.
George and his father have a close encounter with The Babe with a life long lesson imparted by the baseball hero.
The book is beautifully illustrated and has a CD included with Jason Alexander reading the narrative. This is a must have for your baseball fan in your home or school library.

I found you didn't have to necessarily be a baseball fan to enjoy the book. The story was great and the pictures really bring it to life. My son and daughter really enjoyed it and it is now one of their favorite books. I also thought the book was great and I really enjoyed the accompanying CD from Jason Alexander. He did a great job making us feel transported to the 1920's. You can tell by listening to him how much he enjoyed reading it. I also found it funny given the Seinfeld connection as Jason Alexander played George Constanza who worked for the Yankees on the TV show. I give this book two thumbs up!
