Frequently Asked Questions
What is SPF?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. This is a multiplier that tells you how much longer you can remain in the sun without a burn when wearing a sunscreen. For instance, if you can usually tolerate the sun for 10 minutes without a burn, an SPF 15 will provide you with 15 times that, or 150 minutes of protection without burning. Regardless of the SPF level you use, you should reapply sunscreen every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating to help keep your skin protected.
How Do I Know What SPF I Need?
You need to consider a number of factors. How long will you be out in the sun? What is the UV Index for the day? What time of the day will you be out and what activity will you be doing? And, most importantly, what is your skin type? Use the Banana Boat Sunscreen SPF Guide to find out what products are right for you. Regardless of the SPF level you use, you should reapply sunscreen every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating to help keep your skin protected.
Should I Take Extra Precautions In The Sun When Taking Meds?
Photosensitization, an increased sensitivity to sun exposure, is a possible side effect of certain medication, including certain kinds of antibiotics, heart and blood pressure medicines, antihistamines and antidepressants. Consult your physician or pharmacist regarding photosensitization related to any prescription medications.
Do You Burn Moderately and Tan Gradually?
Just because you eventually tan, it doesn’t mean you don’t need protection. Rather, make sun products with an SPF 15 (or SPF 30) part of your daily routine. Try Banana Boat Sport Performance Sunscreen Spray in SPF 15 and SPF 30.

This product does not sting my eyes or crack the cleft in my chin, and it provides good protection. Another Amazonian has complained in these pages that he can't find an expiration date. Actually, in most Banana Boat products there is a series of embossed numbers on the cap or crimp. The first two represent the year, the next three the day of the year. For example, 14159 means that the product was manufactured on the 159th day, June 5, of 2014. The company says its products remain potent for three years from the date of manufacture.
If you apply sunblock 2 times per day, expect to go through a little over 1 tube per person per week. So one three-pack is perfect for a couple, two of them would work for a family of 5, etc. It didn't feel greasy, although of course if you're sweating it will make your sunglasses slide down your nose (a little face powder takes care of that, ladies).
This three-pack is a great value as well. I found a 3-ounce tube of Neutrogena's sunblock for $10 at a local grocery store. This pack cost less than that for twice the sunblock.
We've used Banana Boat's spray-on sunblock and like it too, but it can't go in a carry-on. Banana Boat protects me better than Coppertone's non-greasy formula as well, so for air travel, this is the choice for me.
I use it on my kids, especially on their faces, and so far have had NO crying or tears at all.
I also recommend putting this on their arms and hands so that when they wipe their faces, they don't get tears.
The cheaper sunscreens (non tear free) we use on the body and legs.
I've even started using it for myself for when I'm swimming in the ocean and surfing. Nothing like burning sunscreen in the eyes to make you miss seeing waves.
1. Tear free! It really works.
2. Because it works, you will put more sunscreen on your kids and your own face without fear of stinging and burning.
3. Bottle design makes it easy to get every last drop of sunscreen out of it.
1. A little more expensive than non tear free versions of sunscreen.
2. Sand will stick to it (just like almost every other sunscreen made).
Off the label this product (active ingredients) contains Homosalate (15%) Octinoxate (7.5%), Octisalate (5%) and Titanium Dioxide (2.4%). Unlike some other Banana Boat products it does not have Avobenzone or Oxybenzone. I like that it has Titanium Dioxide as it is a great sun blocker but you really need to work it in.
P.S. This size tube is small enough that you can take it on an airplane.
Step 2: book trip to beach destination (ex: Costa Rica)
Step 3: fill nooks and crannies of carry on travel ziplock toiletry bag with these little guys
Step 4: Whip out at beach cabana you rented and apply before heading to the beach. Tuck into swimsuit top to look cool en route to beach. Whip out again while on beach for reapplication (good observation - that was 3-4 steps in one)
