Frequently Asked Questions About Sun Care, Sunscreen and SPF
What is SPF
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. This is a multiplier that tells you how much longer you can remain in the sun without a burn when wearing a sunscreen. For instance, if you can usually tolerate the sun for 10 minutes without a burn, an SPF 15 will provide you with 15 times that, or 150 minutes of protection without burning. Regardless of the SPF level you use, you should reapply sunscreen every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating to help keep your skin protected.
How Do I Know What SPF I Need?
You need to consider a number of factors. How long will you be out in the sun? What is the UV Index for the day? What time of the day will you be out and what activity will you be doing? And, most importantly, what is your skin type? Use the Banana Boat Sunscreen SPF Guide to find out what products are right for you. Regardless of the SPF level you use, you should reapply sunscreen every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating to help keep your skin protected.
Should I Take Extra Precautions In The Sun When Taking Meds?
Photosensitization, an increased sensitivity to sun exposure, is a possible side effect of certain medication, including certain kinds of antibiotics, heart and blood pressure medicines, antihistamines and antidepressants. Consult your physician or pharmacist regarding photosensitization related to any prescription medications.
Do You Burn Moderately and Tan Gradually?
Just because you eventually tan, it doesn’t mean you don’t need protection. Rather, make sun products with an SPF 15 (or SPF 30) part of your daily routine. Try Banana Boat Sport Performance Sunscreen Spray in SPF 15 and SPF 30.

-Superior for sensitive skin as they aren't absorbed rather stay on the surface and physically reflect the UV away from the skin (most sun products available are chemicals that absorb into the skin and change the UV to heat).
-Stays on much better even when wet (though you should still reapply as directed).
-Begins working immediately since it doesn't need to absorb into the skin first.
-Takes longer to apply and more difficult to rub into skin so it's not visible
-More difficult to remove (you may have to use soap and scrub a little)
-If you become wet it may be slightly visible giving you a white/pink appearance
-More expensive than chemical sunscreens
-Applying when you're already wet or sweaty will make you look like a melting white mess
-For easier application apply before sweating
-Scrub facial hair with a towel after application to remove white residue
-Lightly "buff" with a towel after application to remove excess and minimize the "white look"
-The Banana Boat Kids, Baby, and standard sunblock have the same active ingredients in the same concentration and the inactive ones are in the same order, suggesting the products are all the same just different packaging/marketing. Buy whichever is cheapest they are all safe for use on babies 6 months or older (younger if advised by a doctor)
