Anna Hollis was head of the English department at a prestigious Sydney all-girls school – she loved her job, but was grateful it was school holidays which meant she had some time to sort out her turned upside down life. When she heard the current Headmistress and her much loved friend Heather was being forced to retire due to ill-health, she was surprised to discover her replacement, though temporary, was a male. Anna wondered fleetingly how that would work with a school consisting entirely of females…
As Anna fought with grief and a sense of unreality, her shock was heightened when she discovered secrets in her husband’s past. Did she even know the man she’d lived with for so long? What would become of Anna? Was she strong enough to overcome her demons?
Band of Gold is Aussie author Maggie Christensen’s debut novel, and one which I thoroughly enjoyed. Filled with the love and support of family, grief when a sense of security is lost and hope for the future, it is an emotional but satisfying read. Highly recommended.
The story of Anna is a delicately woven tale of betrayal, pain and hope - one which is as old as time and been the plot of hundreds of thousands of novels - but Ms Christensen manages to create a depth of feeling for the characters which draws the reader in and makes every word and action believable. I felt every emotion that Anna experiences and every problem which Marcus encounters. I remained totally cold over Anna's husband and his lover's problems, but enjoyed the "outer" characters who were charming, annoying and totally human.
A delightful surprise and a darned good read :) Thank you, Maggie Christensen!
The characters are manageable in number – no need to check back on who someone is – and believable in their portrayal. The central character, Anna, is a successful, middle-aged, private school English literature teacher, someone to whom I can relate, partly because I taught in private schools for a few years. She is the nucleus of one circle of people that includes her departing husband, her family to whom she is close, and a few friends and colleagues with whom she has differing levels of intimacy. Marcus, her new school principal, is the key player in a smaller circle of characters. The interaction of these two circles is associated with changes occurring in the lives of many of the story’s figures, with the focus, of course, being on Anna and Marcus.
The story is set mostly in beautiful parts of Sydney that I know well, and this was an added interest for me. The characters were carefully developed and to an appropriate degree for each, with the story flowing smoothly throughout, and, as mentioned above, often with unlikely-to-be-predicted turns.
I think you will be entertained by and enjoy Band of Gold.
