Bandai makes the most precise model kits. Both their Gundam and Star Wars lines are well done. I really have nothing bad to say about any of these kits I have bought.
A couple of notes for those thinking of buying these for children:
1.) They are fairly easy to put together, especially for a child that is into hobby building like Legos or glue-together models. But I highly recommend plastic snips.
2.) The ships snap together, but a few of the pieces (like the laser cannons on the X-Wing are fairly fragile. Also the cockpit window tends to fall off easily, so you may want to glue it.
3.) The model ships with both adhesive and water decals. Water decals look more authentic, but the adhesive decals should be easier for a child to put on.

I built the 144 and am going to add it to a diorama I'm going to make. The large kit is outstanding. It goes together so easy. I used the vinyl stickers. They are thin and go on great. I painted the pilot, R2, the canopy, the cockpit, barber poles, and the chipped paint with Tamiya paints. The rest is Tamiya panel liner and pastel chalks. It came out great!!

I want to note that this is not necessarily the model you buy for an 8 year old who has never put a model together before. There are a number of small, extremely detailed pieces in this kit. The wings, after assembly, can open and close. There are two cockpit options: clear glass, or the framework as seen in the movies.
