Editorial Reviews

Boogie-Woogie piano had been around a long time before bandleaders got hold of the eight-to-the-bar and sent it to college. The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra recorded one of the earliest examples - circa 1938 - to hit the big time, showcasing their pianist Howard Smith. It was a sanitised version of the original Pinetop's Boogie Woogie. It proved to be an overnight sensation and fired up yet another Boogie-Woogie craze. Many swing bands, anxious not to be left out, altered their repertoire accordingly. The result was phenomenal. Even vocal groups, such as The Andrews Sisters helped feed the international craze with their "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" and "Rhumboogie". Just about every instrumental imaginable, from harp to bassoon, was into producing a Boogie Woogie beat. Big Band Boogie was here to stay, and stay it did, until it was gradually nudged aside by small groups adapting the Boogie beat to rock 'n' roll during the 1950s. You may find a foot tapping, an arm twitching or ever some head nodding whilst experiencing some of these fine eight beats, but don't worry, it's a natural reaction that seems to effect most living souls. Listen to tracks that you'd never expect to be given the Boogie Woogie treatment. Also includes tracks never previously issued on LP or CD. Includes Stan Kenton, The Skyrockets, Billy Penrose, T-Bone Walker, Big Jay McNeely & such luminaries of the genre as Count Basie, Will Bradley, Pete Johnson, Freddie Slack etc. Includes a comprehensive discography. A full five hours of infectious foot tapping.

Boogie woogie is an acquired taste. I have some advice: "Aquire it." This CD collection, all by itself, can accomplish that for you.

Rock and roll has taken over the world. Anywhere on the planet, a city without rock and roll on the radio is, I guarantee you, a dictatorship. Where did this triumphant form of jazz come from?

Rock, at least "classic rock," is boogie woogie with lyrics.

But there is more to boogie woogie than its historical place as the father of rock and roll. Boogie woogie has a peculiar, originally a secret, ethical code. I sensed this from my father, who taught me boogie woogie as he had learned it --from jazz masters Muggsy Spanier and Jelly Roll Morton. Once I listened to Bands That Can Boogie Woogie, a personal greed came over me to get a good fake book, one that contained additional left hand rhythm patterns beyond what I already knew. That book was "Boogie Woogie for Beginners: A Piano Method by Frank Paparelli." Paparelli has cracked the secret ethical code.

Paparelli's first suggestion: "Before you can attempt to play Boogie Woogie learn how to get the most out of listening to it." He then suggests that you not apply concepts like "beautiful" or "clinging" or "sweet" to boogie woogie. Why? Such concepts are "hopelessly out of taste" because "corny."

A boogie woogie pianist must not and dare not bore nor condescend to his (originally, a dancing) audience by manipulating their sentiments. Corniness is forbidden.

Fluctuations in timing ("rubato") are forbidden, Paparelli tells us.

Minor key and even clashing chromatic tones are not wrong notes in boogie, they give color and embellish (rather than corny emotional tricks). Boogie woogie, Paparelli tells us,.

For the last fifty years I have lamented the scarcity of big band boogie woogie recordings and this collection has far more of it than I ever hoped to find. I was amazed at how many of the selections really hit the mark. Remastering has cleaned it up and made it a joy to listen to.

If you in anyway like boogie woogie this package is for you. There are a total of 103 tracks in this set from artists like count Basie, tommy Dorsey,Benny Goodman, Harry James, Sidney Bichet, louis Jordan and I have not even scratched the surface of the contents. The sound reproduction is surprisingly good considering the dates some of these tunes were recorded. Since this set comes from the UK you will also find some artists that were popular in England during the boogie period. Song after song just carries you away with great musicians and first rate material. The price for this set is a real bargain when you consider that you are receiving 4 cds. A gem by any standard.
