Don't misunderstand. Death Thing isn't overtly political. It's the story of a crazy man - think Archie Bunker's down on his luck, grossly imperfect, sociopathic third cousin - who turns his car into a lethal trap for the lowlifes who keep breaking into it and ripping him off. What he does, how he does it, and the world in which he operates skewer the America that has devolved through the decades from the awful Reagan legacy until now.
Bang Face is Hilbert's gut punch of a follow-up to Death Thing. His power is intact and pure in this new and practically indescribable psycho joy ride which follows the title character, a disfigured private eye, on a trek through slime and wonder. It has something to do with finding a wondrous glory hole, something to do with identity, everything to do with giving the reader a slog through the promised land of a culture on the skids. It's like a Sam Spade noir written by The Joker.
If you like Bukowski or Harry Crews, I think you're going to like Hilbert. He's got the goods and, thank everything holy or otherwise, he's spreading them around.
I need a Topo Chico, hombre.
