About the Author

B 'Banjo' Paterson was born at Narrambla, NSW in 1864. He was educated in Sydney and practised law until 1900, when he found success as a writer, contributing ballads to the Sydney BULLETIN. He worked as a correspondent for the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD for a time, then sold his poetry rights and bought a property near the upper Murrumbidgee River. He went to Europe during WWI, working as a war correspondent. After the war he remained in journalism, continuing to write poetry as well. Among his best known collections are THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER, RIO GRANDE'S LAST RACE AND OTHER VERSES, THE ANIMALS NOAH FORGOT and a work of fiction, THE SHEARER'S COLT. He died in 1941.

Format: Paperback
The poetry of Banjo Paterson is what I read when I need to relax, when I feel nostalgic for a place I've never been, when I long for endless expanses of land and horses, and just before I take my glasses off for the night. This collection does an admirable job of providing me with a wide and varied samplings of Paterson's writings in a type font that goes easy on the eyes. Containing basically every piece of poetry you could really ever want, I consider this a staple of my library, and would recommend it to anyone, any day of the week (twice on Sundays).

I discovered Banjo Paterson many years ago through an Australian friend, long before the movie "The Man from Snowy River" made him famous. I have a very old copy of this book, and bought this copy for everyday reading and for showing to others.

Banjo Paterson deserves to be better known outside of Australia. He is the author of well-known songs, "Waltzing Matilda" and "The Wild Colonial Boy". He does for Australia what Robert Service does for Canada -- he tells tales of the rugged pioneer Australian, be it good or bad, but always strong. Reading his poems lets you make a deep dive into the national myth.
