Reverend Tom Goodman is ousted from his job as a country vicar for allowing a homeless family to stay in the church hall. Meanwhile, a major bank is trying to rescue its image after the latest in a long string of financial scandals.
It seems like the perfect match and Goodman is hastily appointed as the bank’s new C.E.O. All they have to do now, is promote him as the new face of Shadeys Bank whilst at the same time, keeping him away from the day-to-day business of dubious banking.
However, Tom Goodman has other ideas. He’s not going to be satisfied with being used as an empty puppet for a PR stunt. Unfortunately for Shadeys, Tom is planning on actually making a difference.
And so begins an epic battle of wills. The might of a multi-billion pound bank versus a seemingly naïve country vicar.
No contest.

About the author

In case you don't know, I write comedy. Gentle British comedy. Having grown up with P.G. Wodehouse, the Ealing Comedies and the Carry On movies I like to think I've captured the essence of traditional British Humour but brought it firmly into the... where are we now? No... Not going to think about that.
I also write to a theme. I write about identity, the personae we use to identify ourselves in the world and what happens when that's suddenly taken from us. Who are we when the wave we've been riding all these years dumps us on the shores of Couldn't-Care-Less and moves on? Having been dumped by two big waves I do feel somewhat of an authority.
Primarily I write comedy because I want people to laugh a bit more. I believe in Hope and Second Chances and like to bring a positive feel to my writing. And it doesn't matter if the glass is half empty or half full as long as it's still got at least some beer in it. Although if you're looking for cruel, biting satire then please buy my books anyway. You'll be disappointed but I need the money.
So, about me. I currently live in the Alpujarras in Southern Spain. I'm here on a fact finding mission for my next book. At least that's what's going on my tax return. I am fortunate enough to have been given a second chance at life. Having spent most of my working life in Sales and Marketing, at all levels and many different industries, I was finally dumped one last time when the industry I was in found it could no longer survive so much government help and finally collapsed.
I now live in a funny little house in a strange little valley with my wife and soulmate (Just hope they never bump into each other), two cats and an indeterminate number of dogs.

The author doesn’t make the mistake of having the vicar too naive, his gradually unfolding back story is one of many threads which make this book more intricate than it initially seems.
There are excruciatingly wonderful examples of corporate jargon and personalities and it’s a book that I think will hold favourite quotes for its readers. One of many I’ve highlighted...” careless talk finds mischief for idle hands”.
I’m hoping the other books by this writer are as good, Even half as good will keep me in giggles for ages.

"What we need is somebody who can show the world that Shadeys Bank is the epitome of fairness and honesty."
The bank appoints him as their CEO, talk about getting more that you bargained for! We have great fun following Tom's progress as he seeks to do the right thing, often with amusing and satisfying consequences,
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, which I think is one of Luddington's best. Highly recommended.

In ‘The Bank of Goodliness’ comic genius David Luddington delivers another sure-fire bestseller. As always, his research is immaculate, I can only imagine the fun he had fact finding banks, bibles and beer all at the same time. David has always had an impressive ability to turn complicated subjects into amusing narrative, but this time he has excelled himself with an analogy of the banking crisis in a plate of stinky cheese. It’s masterful stuff.
If you you’re looking for a fun read where the dark suits get what’s coming and the good guy gets the girl, give ‘The Bank of Goodliness’ a try. I highly recommend it.

It’s a comedy/drama and perhaps even a thriller if you accept something quirky, gentle and humorous (I laughed out loud as well as smiled throughout) can still be gripping. It was a page turner for me.
I don’t generally consider re-reading a book (there’s so much to read) but I’ll be keeping this on my bookshelf (or in this case, my kindle) with that intention. It’s that enjoyable.
But a note; If your view of the world is to be good to money, not to people then this story may leave you feeling a little uncomfortable and self conscious.
I received a free advance copy of this book and this review is objective and honest (and I did buy a copy as well because it’s an excellent story).
