What is this I don't even

I've gone on the record as a fan of this author before and it keeps on being justified and confirmed by everything I read by him. I need to read American Psycho, but apparently this is American Psycho: the readable version. I don't know about that, but it's definitely a member of the power-porn genre: media about financial or political shenanigans that also involves lots of sex. Think House of Cards, Game of Thrones--the TV version, specifically--or Mad Men.

The thing about this is that it pulls no punches. The prose is slick, biting, and acerbic. The humour is black as the protagonist's soul. It takes no prisoners and makes no apologies. It's...wow. The funny thing is, it's kind of like Fifty Shades of Grey--if it was about Christian, bereft of simpering Ana, and if he was really a psychopath.

I can't even really poke holes in the writing. I mean, sure, it probably has flaws, but they're stitched into the hemlines of a custom-tailored suit so well that I can't see them. I will say that it's not for shrinking violets and explores some hella transgressive themes, so if swearing, murder, sexual assault, and kinky sex scare you off, it's not the book for you. And you are missing out.

Buy the living daylights out of this. This author has made inroads into Palahniuk's batting range, if you will pardon the mixed metaphors. It's that good.

"Like most sociopaths, I work in finance. It’s the sector of the economy where smart, unscrupulous b******s can legally take money from people who don’t know any better.

"And get a pat on the back for it."

This book was really well written and fast paced. I loved it. From the start you know you're riding shotgun with the bad guy and while you should be begging for him to fail, you find yourself gunning for him the entire time. The story was like a mix between American Psycho and Boiler Room which turns out to be a really awesome combo. It's all about the shark tank financial broker profession, something that involves a lot of jargon and movements that the average person is not at all familiar with, but the author did a great job of informing us without overburdening the reader. You know enough to understand what's happening, but not so much that you feel bored or overwhelmed.
My only complaint about the entire story is that it seemed like everybody was having sex with everybody and their mother.It's not graphic, you don't get throw into the room with them while it happens, but there was rarely a relationship or interaction between characters without at least some sexual innuendo. Then again, I've never been exposed to that work environment so I don't know, maybe that's the norm?
Either way, that was my only complaint and it's a minor one at that. If you're looking for an interesting, well paced, well written thriller with a bad guy you love to hate, read this book. You won't be disappointed.

Fear and Loathing without the Hallucinations

A spineless-liberal premise guides this well-written, amusingly heartfelt, in-your-face portrayal of scruples, or more appropriately to the tone of the book, the lack of them in the banking world. “Banksters” spills over the reader with rabid renderings (love the alliteration...ha, ha!) of people behaving like sniveling rats, smelly toadies, greasy sharks and slimy lizards. Guess what? They are all out to get each other. Burlesque at its best personifies the largest and the smallest of vanities found in the executive offices of the places where ‘shit sandwiches’, or bad financial products, make their way to unsuspecting clients.
A well-researched element of this book falls into the category of passing difficult to understand financial information to the reader in canapé size bites in the form of bursts of delectable dialogue. Compared to some other of the author’s great books, Banksters succeeds at letting the characters deliver the message not the narrative. As a result, the book goes down easier. This guy makes stereotypical sketches or normally wooden Indian characters come to life.
The only quibble I might have with the book relates to the subject matter having been beaten over the head by so many stories that it risks being redundant, but that is a purely personal reaction. The book speaks to the Hunter Thompson fan in me and the snappy dialogue would once again(as Wilson’s other work would) shine on the silver screen. Bravo for being less heavy handed with the anti-capitalist, agitprop message mongering.
I sat down on a Sunday afternoon and couldn’t put the book down. What more can a reader ask for!

Better than American Psycho

This is a book that reminded me of American Psycho only without the excessive style references, food, ect and the overdone banality. The story is set in a world of finance which I'm completely unfamiliar with, but Wilson made it easy to understand and it didn't intrude on the storyline. The reader is introduced to the charismatic but power hungry Dane. I liked him immediately even while knowing he was a sociopath, I couldn't help myself. He was a good character, who wasn't completely bad; Dane possessed redeeming qualities, they were simply very deep down. Good or bad, I found myself rooting for him, as he attempts to make his way to the coveted position in his new job. There are obstacles, women and enemies pretending to be friends...all this and the artful way Wilson writes, created a five star book for me.
