Hewats' Bantu Folk Lore is a dense ethnographic study of the medicine and superstitions of various tribal groups in South Africa at the dawn of the 20th century. Unlike some works of the period, this text does not go out of its way to denounce as "primitive" all the medical efforts of the tribes there, although it does scorn certain practices of the "licentious" kind.
Much of the content here is herbal. A large section is dedicated singularly to superstition and ritual involving those struck by lightning. Highly linguistic, it also gives the Anglicized tribal names for various herbal preparations and for different types of tribal physicians.
