Directions

Soak one half cup of dal and rinse until the water runs clear. Place the dal into a saucepan with 1 cup of water and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer until all the water has been absorbed or about 15 minutes.

This is some of the best dal out there, been using it for years. For the people complaining about "mold" this is the outter shell of the Mung bean which is green and was not completely removed. And yes if you're wanting to sprout the beans you must get the ones that are GREEN because this means they haven't been hulled. Also when you rinse the beans they make bubbles because of the saponins that are washing off...this is totally normal! People please use your internet to do some research before you purchase a product and give a bad review when you have no idea what you're talking about.

Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Publix, none of these have organic split mung beans, so I'm so glad Amazon does. We make a huge pot a few times a month in my house and eat through it over the course of a few days. These are delicious and so nutritious. For a great recipe, try cooking the spices in grass-fed ghee. The New York Times has a great recipe online that we use, it is simple and tasty every time - we just soak the beans 24 hours and drain them once or twice in that period, before cooking them.

I am a trained vegetarian chef and have been cooking all types of dried beans for over 25 years. I bought these to make kitchari. I soaked them for over 24 hours on my countertop, and cooked them with tons of water and no salt and they were still hard. Then I tried again, thinking it was fluke. Twice the mung dal wouldn't soften and I wasted rice, ghee and spices and my time! I wrote to Banyan and they said they cook them everyday with no problem, which was also frustrating to hear. Thankfully, Amazon has great customer service and gave me a refund for this defective product.
