They're cheap so if you lose it in the field or drop it over the side of a boat, OH WELL.
They do work and they work well. I used two of these for three straight weeks while supporting a major operation and they worked GREAT and the batteries lasted even under heavy use (no, not the whole three weeks but more than 24 hours per charge).
They are dual band HAM radios (2m/70cm) and will work HAM repeaters.
YOU NEED A HAM LICENSE TO LEGALLY OPERATE THESE.
THEY ARE NOT LEGAL FOR FRS USE (too much power)
I now have the newer version, the "TP" model with double the power on HIGH. Those will hit a repeater nearly 50 miles away with a better antenna (Nagoya 771 or a Tram 1185 mag mount). Haven't tried this 4 watt unit to do that but since I only need 5 watts on my mobile with the Tram antenna, I suspect these 4 watt radios will make the trip as well.
The middle hook 'tab' is not long enough to "Click" firmly it into place.
The unit will power up, but if you pull too far on the cable, the adapter will fly off the radio in disbelief.
Oh yeah, after pressing it in a few times, the cover plate fell off, exposing the typical Chinese quality workmanship.
It has (2) 220uF Caps soldered directly to a bent leg 7808 regulator, attached to a 1"x1" alum sheet'; all of which is hot glued to the case.
Works great with a super glue repair and 1 wrap of duct tape around the radio to hold it in place.
Other than that, NO complaints !!!
While the menu system is almost impossible to easily navigate, I was able to figure out how to program the radio on my Mac using CHIRP and this cable without installing any drivers: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HUB0ONK/ref=cm_cd_asin_lnk (it's a real, genuine cable vs. those counterfeit ones out there).
Here in New Hampshire, I was shocked to find out I actually had fairly good reception, hearing a repeater ~12 miles away. I then purchased an upgraded antenna (http://www.amazon.com/BaoFeng-NA-701-Genuine-Antenna-SMA-Female/dp/B00KBZLOHC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1427673348&sr=8-2&keywords=na-701) and that seems to be giving me range 15-18 miles away in some cases. Fairly solid in my opinion.
I'm going to go hiking this summer in the White Mountains and take this radio with me. While it isn't waterproof, it's a nice light radio for emergency use and hopefully some QSOs!
AFA operation setting inside my brick house I was receiving from a source over 20 miles away (antenna elevation about 36'). I was unable to hit the repeaters that are about 20+ miles away from inside the house with the stock antenna. Today I will try a couple after market antennas and from a place my cell usally works at (very poor cell service where I am).
I purchased these to get both my dauther and I our license and to use them when we are out on the ATVs/camping/hiking/ and hunting. Maybe it will be something she will stick with. Of course emergency situations these may come in handy as well.
I only gave these a three star rating since I don't like thinking I am getting updated antennas and don't. Other than that it would had been a four with after some use a possible 5. To bad the pic is wrong and misleading.
