This aside, the radio can be easily set up manually without the use of the software programming. My hardest programming step was setting up the frequencies and their channels- which I will detail below:
In VFO mode, (the V/M key) set the frequency, tones and offset-if any, (see page 26 )
Next press the "F" key once, select the channel desired to store this frequency. A triangle below the channel number indicates this
number has already been selected
now press "V/M" once
Press "V/M" to return to the VFO mode and to program another channel
Using a Bird Watt meter into a 50 Ohm dummy load, the transceiver's power is 10 Watts Low, 25 Watts Medium, and 45 Watts High. Very respectable. Keying down in High power will warm up the heat sink, but in the lower power setting it runs ice cold. The over-the-air audio reports are good, both in the broad and narrow band settings.
I am very pleased with the the little radio, and plan to purchase another one shortly. If only the manual where written better... as I said, 5 Stars!
Also there is no free software to program it, the manual is written in Chinglesh and there is no way to Alpha tag the programmed channels as far as I can tell. The channel knob bounces and does not seem like it will withstand much use.
It does scan quite quickly and measures near its rated RF power so that is nice.
Honestly one can buy a pre-programmed professional Motorola UHF with FCC approval on Ebay for half price and get the programming software also on ebay for less than $15. Or alternatively buy an 8W Baofeng hand-held with a good antenna and some accessories for less $ and get much more features plus VHF.
Audio seem good until it quit a month after buying it. (It was a Amazon Warehouse purchase so it could have been a return).
I plan to return it and look for a VHF/UHF dual band. But it was an excellent price for what it did.
