Bought the BaoFeng BF-F8HP Radio, and below in the "also bought" area was an antenna and this cable. It claims to be BaoFeng, but it turned out to be a counterfeit cable and it wouldn't work. In addition the DVD they included was only a 2.5" diameter and wouldn't insert into my iMac DVD drive. So I had to return this...and the whole thing was a waste of time.

The "REAL" cable has LED's on the cable, and a curved center portion and is available here at the BaoFeng Amazon site.

Counterfeit Cable - May Work,May Not

I'm giving this purchase a single star. The cable received did not look like the cable pictured, and both the pictured and received cables are not genuine Baofeng products (as labelled), but are counterfeits. Genuine Baofeng cables use an FTDI chipset. This used a Prolific chipset. This will cause you problems with programming some Baofeng radios. This worked fine with default drivers for BF-888s, but failed on UV-5r until I installed the Prolific driver in place. Side Note: Real Baofeng cables have a coke-bottle shape to the USB plug. Best to avoid issues and pay for the real cable: PC03 FTDI Authentic Genuine USB Programming Cable for BaoFeng, Kenwood, Wouxun, AnyTone

NOTE: I've been "Radioactive" for 60+ years and have had hundreds of radios. I ordered this cable at the same time I ordered the Baofeng UV5R. It was a spur of the moment purchase when an ad popped up under another order for some electronic tools and parts I was making (yep, the Amazon pop-up ad marketing ploy works :) I was in need of an HT and sprung for it without researching further.

The UV5R radio turned out to be an excellent radio (NOT ALL are, some on our local repeater sound terrible, Baofeng QC isn't very good), but when the radio and cable arrived I discovered that the cable has the FAKE Prolific chip in it. I had to do some research and found instructions on the Miklor dot com web site along with the OLD Prolific driver I needed to make the cable work. Got the radio programmed. But when the computer (Windows 7) updated drivers it also updated the Prolific driver and the next time I wanted to program the radio I had to go through it all again!

Last week I ordered a REAL FTDI programming cable for the radio and it's due to arrive Thursday. Yes, money is tight, but I'm in my '70s and life is just to short to fight fake cables and driver problems.

Works as expected caveat: driver issues

I purchased this item to make my life easier. Unfortunately, that was only partially correct. In linux it simply worked ( no drivers required) , OS X 10.12.3 was a different story and a bit of a pain. The root cause was security issues and unsigned drivers. I finally found ch34x_install_v1.3.zip this installed without problems. I have not tried it on Windows 10, I simply use Windows 10 in an emergency compatibility mode. I use chirp_daily build to ensure I am up to date on supported radios. I took one star off for driver issues. Note: did not attempt included mini (CD no CD-Drive old tech)

If you need Mac OS X 10.12.3 driver and can't find them drop me a note I have the Zip. I searched for: Search "usb 340 chipset driver for mac" Results "CH340 CH341 serial adapters on macOS 10.12 Sierra kernel panic" on that page look for link (original drivers post on his blog) click it. Now get ch34x_install_v1-3

Doesn't work with Windows 11

This worked very well with the open-source programming software (CHIRP) until I needed to reprogram the radio last night. After the software failed to recognize any of my COM ports, I went into Device Manager and got the message that this cable (and it looks like the cable, not the radio) doesn't work under Windows 11. I'm not sure if there's an updated cable that works, or if it's a different sort of issue. (Baofeng/Pofung, can you respond?)

After receiving this cable, it was pretty clear that this was probably not a genuine cable. After some tinkering with a few drivers and different links online I finally figured out the right one for this cable.

I stumbled on the initial highly upvoted answer and that was exactly what I needed for OSX:

1. Downloaded the serial detect tool from: mac-usb-serial (dot) com
2. Confirmed this was not a PL2303 chip but a WinChiphead chip
3. Downloaded this package: wch (dot) cn/download/CH341SER_MAC_ZIP.html
4. Showed up under /dev/cu* appropriately.
5. Launched Chirp from homebrew and worked great!

Works to program Baofeng via Macbook and Chirp

After doing some research, including some of the reviews of this product already here on Amazon, I bought this cable to program my Baofeng handheld HAM radio with Chirp on my Macbook. Apparently there are some cables with a chip issue, but this one worked fine for me for both a full download of the radio and an upload with edited channel names. Initially I just wanted to edit channel names, but clearly the ability to program the radio from the software is a huge win - probably saving a few hours easily. Not to mention future changes will be easy.

This worked, and delivery was pretty quick. However, the Baofeng is a bit odd in that strange things happen in communicating with it via the PC. From what others say, this is a radio, not cable issue. To successfully transfer the data from my PC, I had to have it all ready to transmit, shove the cable into the radio, and quickly press 'send' on the (freeware) 'CHIRP' program. That's because if you just connect the cable, the radio instantly goes into a permanent transmitting mode. To avoid unexpected finals damage this way, make sure you have an antenna connected when you program the unit! All said and done, it is still much easier and quicker than programming via the radio's keyboard and highly unintuitive key sequences!

Dont' bother if you run a Mac

I hate it because on my Mac, I've wasted a lot of time to get it working, and I mean a lot of time downloading drivers. Like most Chinese electronic products, they tend to not support a Mac. It might work for you on a PC. But from my POV it's a big thumbs down.
