Editorial Reviews
Review
―Abner Chou, President and John F. MacArthur Endowed Fellow, The Master's University
"The question of whether to baptize their infant children is a significant challenge for many Christian parents. In his new book, The Baptism Debate, Peter Goeman carefully examines the best arguments for infant baptism and shows from Scripture that only those who profess faith in Christ should be baptized. Goeman's work is thoroughly researched, clearly written, and exegetically compelling. I couldn't recommend it more highly to anyone who is wrestling with this issue!"
―Matt Waymeyer, Associate Pastor, Grace Immanuel Bible Church; Academic Dean, The Expositors Seminary
"Peter Goeman provides a superb resource that fairly critiques the belief in and practice of paedobaptism common in Reformed circles. He also offers a clear understanding of the strong scriptural support for believer's or biblical baptism. Anyone desiring to correctly understand this key issue will find this book a great help for their understanding of God's intentions for His followers."
―Michael Grisanti, Professor of Old Testament, The Master's Seminary
"Friendly doctrinal divisions among faithful orthodox believers can be found throughout church history. In our current age of pragmatism and watered-down doctrine, it is refreshing to read an articulate yet gracious defense of a Baptist understanding of baptism. Peter Goeman helpfully lays out the key issues, showing readers how the doctrine of baptism has far-reaching implications for one's system of theology. This volume is a wonderful resource for believers seeking to better understand the full significance of Christian baptism."
―Kaspars Ozolins, Assistant Professor of Old Testament Interpretation, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
"Peter Goeman clears away the debris of tradition, misinterpretation and speculation so that the sunlight of scripture can illuminate the truth of believer's baptism. With a scholar's mind and a shepherd's heart, he offers a clear and compelling understanding of this significant act in the believer's life."
―Stephen Davey, Pastor, the Shepherd's Church; President, Shepherds Theological Seminary
"In a day when doctrinal distinctives are being downplayed and evangelical ecumenism is promoted, it can be very unpopular to insist on biblical accuracy in an area that some might call 'secondary.' Peter Goeman is concerned, however, that Christians who are lovely people can still be wrong! But it is not just a matter of simple disagreement on 'secondary issues' that concerns Goeman. He knows that some doctrines have effects beyond a classroom debate. Such is the practice of infant baptism. Other doctrines are affected by this practice, even soteriology. With all of his evident concern, Goeman does not engage in insults, but in an even-handed discussion of the biblical significance of baptism. I appreciate his informed theological approach and pray that this volume will have a wide effect. His concerns need to be heard."
―William Varner, Professor of Biblical Languages and Bible Exposition, The Master's University

Having also read other books on this topic, I am impressed by how Goeman made new and insightful points on this age-old debate. The book covers a lot of material in a concise format and I admire how it did justice to the big subject, leaving the reader with a solid understanding of the Reformed and baptist views on baptism. As a Reformed paedobaptist myself, I can testify that Goeman did a good job of explaining the Reformed paedobaptist understanding of baptism and getting to the heart of the debate which makes this book stand out from the rest.
I highly recommend this book for believers on both sides of the issue (paedobaptists and credobaptists). Goeman clearly spent a lot of time learning about the Reformed paedobaptist perspective on baptism and put effort in really understanding it before writing against it which made his arguments all the more worthwhile reading. I really appreciated how respectful Goeman is towards those he disagrees with, making it clear that his desire is not to “win” but that his readers would glorify God by coming to believe what Scripture truly teaches.
This book challenged and taught me many valuable things and I know it’ll continue to make me examine and evaluate what and why I believe what I do in baptism. For every believer that wants to follow the example of the noble Bereans and examine the Scriptures for truth (Acts 17:11), read this book because it will help you to do just that!
Dr. Goeman takes a balanced and objective approach in the book. He discusses the arguments put forth by those who hold a paedobaptist view (in their owns words) and then analyzes whether this view can withstand the evidence presented in Scripture. Dr. Goeman's excellent and thorough use of Scripture to support his arguments and the fair treatment of those he disagrees with makes his book an invaluable resource for anyone who wants to gain a deeper understanding of the baptismal debate.
Dr. Goeman's credibility as an author is established by his careful and thoughtful exegesis of the biblical text. He lets the Scripture speak for itself and gives those who hold to infant baptism an opportunity to speak for themselves. Overall, "Paedobaptism and the Baptismal Debate" is a well-written and well-researched book that I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to understand the complexities of the baptismal debate from a biblical perspective.
The chapters include:
Chapter 1: The Relationship between Faith and Baptism
Chapter 2: Understanding the Reformed Paedobaptist Position
Chapter 3: Paedobaptism and the Covenant of Grace
Chapter 4: Paedobaptism and the One People of God.
Chapter 5: Has Baptism Replaced Circumcision?
Chapter 6: Household Baptisms and the Covenantal View of Families
Chapter 7: The Biblical Significance and Mode of Baptism
Chapter 8: Embracing the Biblical Picture of Baptism

It is very helpful to see how the practice of baptism was viewed in the early church and when and why changes occurred during the Reformation. The biblical text of Scripture is thoroughly handled and opposing views cited and critiqued, in this well researched evaluation of baptism.
The book is a must read for anyone wanting to understanding baptism and especially those who have questions about infant baptism.
Since he has taken the time to craft such a thoughtful study, I think you will find this work informative and challenging in a helpful way.

Personally, I am a Dispensational who attends a United Reformed Church (Paedobaptist). I am very thankful for my church and love the people and the teaching. With that said, I am not convinced of the Paedobaptist position. Neill’s chapter on the newness of the new covenant is what pushed me away from Paedobaptism. To see Goeman deal so thoroughly with the issue of the newness of the new covenant was very helpful.
I found the first chapter to be of particular importance and help. Initially I thought it was weak, but as it drew to a close, Goeman pointed out some things I’ve never noticed before. The divorce between faith and baptism was a very late invention, and not even Lutherans believe it. That doesn’t make it false, ultimately, only scripture can do that. But seeing how Zwingli brought this about was an eye opener.
Very thorough book and helpful for anyone struggling with the issue of Paedobaptism.
