Barabbas the film is a 1961 religious epic starring Anthony Quinn in the lead role of a thief who is released from Roman custody instead of Jesus Christ. The film was based on a 1950 novel by Par Lagerkvist and was conceived as a grand epic, with producer Dino De Laurentiis and director Richard Fleischer sparing little expense in creating a film spectacular. For the accompanying music they approached noted composer Mario Nascimbene and conducted by Franco Ferrara. The end result is one of Nacimbes best known works, an intriguing mix of traditional film music with the introduction of electronic sounds achieved by manipulating tape speeds.

Had this great score on vinyl in the late sixties-- but lost it, somehow. Like the movie, now available on DVD, the score is as unique and cool as I remember it. Barabbas is the most artistically executed biblical epic picture of the period. Script, production design, cinematography, effect sequences, casting choices and of course, musical score are all a notch above what the subject material might suggest. This is what Orson Welles might have done with a biblical film assignment. I particularly liked the track showing how musical instrument recordings were manipulated to create sound effects for the film. Both the film and the sound track are musts for serious students of both art forms.
