Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This biography of Barack Obama begins at the same moment as many other recent biographies of the presidential hopeful: with Senator Obama’s watershed address to the 2004 Democratic National Convention. Subsequent chapters follow Obama chronologically through his international childhood, his university years and reconnection with his father’s Kenyan family, and finally his political career, ending with a chapter that presents the unique issues Obama faces in his run for the White House. The text is straightforward and concise and includes contextual definitions for terms that may be new to many students, such as community organizer. The many, mostly color photos include a few random, stock place fillers (a shot of Columbia University’s library, for example), but most will draw students’ attention, including Obama’s yearbook photos and several images of his multicultural half siblings. A chronology and chapter notes sourcing direct quotes conclude this timely, sturdy title in the African-American Biography Library series. Grades 5-8. --Gillian Engberg --This text refers to an alternate Library Binding edition.
